Former Hong Kong financial secretary John Tsang has joined digital wealth management platform StashAway as a member of its advisory committee. The appointment has further promoted Tsang's recent announcement of the launch of his NFT collection.
StashAway said Tsang will provide a dependable voice to the public when it comes to investing, having consistently been a strong advocate of education. Boasting more than three decades of experience in Hong Kong’s civil service sector across the government offices of trade, commerce, housing, industry, technology, and finance, Tsang has been promoting technology education.
Commenting on his appointment, he said, "Currently, there’s a lack of sensible investment options in Hong Kong, and not enough people are taking charge of their finances. StashAway is helping people in Hong Kong build long-term wealth while making it easy to learn about personal finances and investing."
To go with the appointment, Tsang will be giving away part of his exclusive "Choi Yeah" NFT collection to new StashAway clients who make an investment of at least HK$50,000 in their first deposit. Owners of this NFT collection can also expect to receive additional seasonal gifts, and royalties from secondary NFT sales will go towards supporting local technology startups.
"Tsang truly understands the public - from their concerns about their everyday finances through to investing towards their retirement. With him joining our advisory committee, he brings us closer to empowering more people to achieve long-term wealth," said Stephanie Leung, head of StashAway Hong Kong and group deputy CIO.
Last week, Tsang announced the launch of his project consisting of a collection of 3,000 "Choi Yeah" NFTs. "Choi Yeah" is the Cantonese pronunciation (財爺) of the nickname of financial secretary of the Hong Kong government. Tsang said he will provide recipients of the NFTs with other gifts, including a poem, song, or some articles. Owners of "Choi Yeah NTFs" will also be invited to activities about the Web 3.0 universe.
He added that the project is part of his effort to contribute to the city's startups too.
However, Tsang's announcement coincided with Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam's daily press conference in the morning. Lam said that she will not seek re-election for a second term in office, citing family reasons for her decision. There were some speculations on the Internet about the date and time of Tsang's announcement, but Tsang clarified that he and his team had decided to roll out the NFT project today.
Moreover, Tsang has been working with various private companies after leaving the Hong Kong government in 2017. He is now senior consultant for virtual insurance company Bowtie Insurance. Recently, he also starred in ViuTV's drama series In Geek We Trust.
