AirAsia has received the green light to conduct remote drone pilot training. The latest development supports the upcoming drone pilot project for the delivery of goods from the company's eCommerce platforms, using automated drones.

Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Limited, Bo Lingam, said this new training programme provides an opportunity to upskill its Allstars and offer new programmes for the broader community, as well as supporting the drone industry in providing quality training to have more qualified remote pilots in Malaysia.

At the same time, president, AirAsia Group (digital), Aireen Omar, said innovation has always been in the company's DNA and drone delivery will soon become its latest logistics solution, offering "a strong boost" to support the ever-growing eCommerce industry. "Most importantly, this innovation will allow us to create new high-tech job opportunities for Malaysians," she added. The training will be conducted at AirAsia Academy located in KL Sentral and practical training will be conducted at the YMCA Kuala Lumpur field, adjacent to KL Sentral.

According to Aireen, while some are losing their jobs in aviation, AirAsia is offering them a second chance to build a new career with the company through eCommerce with initiatives such as this. "Drones have the unique ability to truly transform and expand the delivery space, from eCommerce to supporting agriculture by distributing fertiliser and seeds more efficiently, to the transportation of medicines and supplies to remote rural areas, for example," she explained.

Last November, AirAsia rode the eCommerce wave by launching airasia express, an addition to its wide array of online services that seek to ensure fast, easy and affordable parcel delivery for consumers. Airasia xpress is powered by Teleport, the company's logistics arm. Meanwhile in July. it also extended it eCommerce services to users in Sabah, with users in Kota Kinabalu being among the first in East Malaysia to receive offers from airasia food and airasia fresh.
