Coffee Meets Bagel brews up a new recipe for modern romance

Coffee Meets Bagel Worldwide (CMB) has rolled out a major refresh of its dating platform as it looks to address dating fatigue and encourage more meaningful connections in an increasingly crowded online dating market.

Dubbed “CMB 2.0”, the overhaul introduces a redesigned user experience, new conversation tools, enhanced matchmaking powered by machine learning, and features aimed at helping users transition from online conversations to offline dates.

According to the company, the refresh is designed to tackle common frustrations among users, including endless swiping, superficial conversations and matches that fail to translate into real-life meetings. Rather than focusing on increasing engagement alone, the update aims to encourage more intentional dating behaviours and deeper interactions.

Among the new features is 'Topic suggestions', which generates personalised conversation starters based on a match's profile and chat history to help users move beyond generic opening messages. The prompts remain editable, allowing users to personalise conversations while overcoming messaging fatigue.

The platform has also introduced ‘Headlines’, a short biography displayed beneath a user's name to offer additional context and personality beyond profile prompts.

Meanwhile, ‘Real dates’ is designed to bridge the gap between matching and meeting in person by surfacing users' dating preferences and suggesting activities that align with how they prefer to spend time together. Coffee Meets Bagel said it plans to expand the feature through partnerships with brands and venues to create curated real-world dating experiences.

Supporting the refresh is a rebuilt recommendation engine powered by advanced machine learning. The company said the system continuously adapts to users' evolving preferences and prioritises mutual compatibility over one-sided interactions or surface-level signals.

The update follows an initial rollout of the platform's redesigned interface in June. According to Coffee Meets Bagel, early results have been encouraging, with messages sent alongside likes increasing by approximately 30% and average profile viewing time rising by 21%, suggesting users are spending more time engaging with potential matches.

Alongside the platform refresh, Coffee Meets Bagel is relaunching its ‘Wedding sponsorship program’, offering eligible couples who met through the app a goodwill contribution towards their wedding celebrations. Successful applicants may receive support for elements such as a dessert table, photo booth or late-night refreshments, as well as a refreshed couples' kit and premium referral codes for single wedding guests.

The relaunch underscores the company's continued positioning around long-term relationships, as it seeks to distinguish itself from swipe-first dating platforms by focusing on helping users build meaningful, lasting connections.

“The future of dating is about helping daters form meaningful connections. That starts with encouraging better dating habits, enabling more thoughtful conversations, and making it easier for people to take connections beyond the screen and into real life. Every update in CMB WW 2.0 has been informed by real feedback from our community, because the people using the app should shape its future," said Shn Juay, CEO, Coffee Meets Bagel Worldwide.

She added, "This redesign marks an exciting new chapter for us: one that puts control back in the hands of daters and helps them approach dating with greater intention. Our goal is simple: to help singles date better, be better daters, and ultimately date for something real."

Additionally, Juay said the relaunch of the ‘Wedding sponsorship program’ is intended as a way of giving back to couples who found lasting relationships through the platform.

She added that the company has celebrated numerous Coffee Meets Bagel weddings over the years, including one officiated by co-founder Arum Kang, and said each wedding serves as a reminder of the platform's mission to help people build meaningful, long-term relationships.

The latest refresh comes months after Coffee Meets Bagel partnered SG Culture Pass (SGCP) on a year-long initiative to encourage more intentional dating through arts and cultural experiences.

Under the collaboration, themed "Date with intention: Culture brings us closer", the dating platform is promoting workshops, performances, museums and heritage attractions as alternatives to traditional dinner dates. Singles can also use their government-backed SG$100 SG Culture Pass credits to redeem eligible activities, making cultural experiences more accessible while showcasing uniquely Singaporean date ideas.
