Uber to buy Delivery Hero for US$14.8bn

Uber to buy Delivery Hero for US$14.8bn

Uber is acquiring Delivery Hero for US$14.8 billion, a move that would create a combined platform spanning 99 countries and bring together two of the world's biggest names in food delivery and mobility.

The deal, if completed, would see Uber extend its reach into key markets across Asia and beyond, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and the Philippines. The combined business recorded US$236 billion in gross bookings in 2025, underscoring the sheer scale of the proposed platform.

The offer is expected to close in the second half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. Until then, both businesses will continue to operate independently.

For consumers, the acquisition promises greater choice and value. Uber has planned to bring Delivery Hero's popular local brands into its ecosystem, giving users access to a wider range of dining and everyday essentials. The company also aims to expand its Uber One membership programme across more markets, offering subscribers a more seamless experience.

Merchants stand to gain access to Uber's large and growing user base, along with enhanced advertising and promotional tools to help boost demand. Couriers and drivers, meanwhile, are expected to see higher order volumes and more earning opportunities as the combined network becomes more efficient.

A key driver behind the offer is Uber's proven cross-platform model. The deal nearly doubles the number of markets where Uber will offer both mobility and delivery services - from 34 to 58. In Uber's existing markets, users who engage with both mobility and delivery generate roughly three times the bookings and profits compared to single-service users.

Uber said it is committed to preserve Delivery Hero's identity and workforce. The company has pledged to keep Delivery Hero's headquarters in Berlin and maintain its local team until at least 2029. Uber has also committed to investing US$2.29 billion in Germany over the next five years, focusing on growing its corporate workforce, expanding its nationwide business, and launching autonomous vehicle partnerships with the German automotive industry.

To address market overlaps, Delivery Hero has separately agreed to sell its businesses in 14 markets - where Uber Eats and Delivery Hero currently compete - to SSW Partners, a New York-based investment firm. SSW will take over these operations with a commitment to supporting local teams and finding long-term homes for the businesses.

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, said Delivery Hero’s team has built an extraordinary business, with beloved local brands.

"By bringing our platforms together, Uber will extend affordable, reliable delivery to many millions more people in some of the world’s most dynamic economies, while creating more opportunities for merchants and couriers,” Khosrowshahi said.

Delivery Hero’s management board and supervisory board has welcomed the transaction and support the strategic rationale of the combination.

Niklas Östberg, CEO and co-founder of Delivery Hero, described the company was "excited" about a potental takeover.

"Uber’s global mobility and delivery platform and our shared commitment to innovation make this the right partnership to build on Delivery Hero’s strengths in local food delivery and quick commerce, and to take our everyday app strategy further for our customers.”

Kristin Skogen Lund, chair of the Delivery Hero supervisory board, added the food delivery business is highly competitive and scale dependent.

"It is challenging to build from a European base, yet we have achieved an enormous amount over 15 years. Joining forces with a strong partner now is the right move for Delivery Hero to best secure its future competitiveness and ability to deliver value for all our stakeholders."
