Uber has appointed Candy Lui (pictured) as its new head of communications for Hong Kong, reporting to Rym Saker, APAC communications director of Uber.
Succeeding Polly Wong, Lui will be overseeing PR and communications, social media in the region in her new role.
Lui brings a diverse background in media and public affairs to the ride-hailing giant. She began her career in broadcast journalism before transitioning to public service within the Hong Kong government, where she managed public relations for major land creation and infrastructure projects. Most recently, she served as the senior manager of corporate communications at Octopus, where she led stakeholder engagement, communications strategy, and crisis management.
Lui's appointment follows a milestone year for the company. Back in October, Uber Hong Kong celebrated its 11th anniversary with a territory-wide brand campaign. Reflecting on millions of rides completed since its local debut in 2014, the campaign highlighted the personal stories and community milestones that have shaped its journey in the city.
The anniversary campaign also coincided with a major regulatory turning point, launching just as Hong Kong's legislature passed a long-awaited bill to regulate ride-hailing services under a formal licensing regime.
To bring its community stories to life, Uber partnered with popular local YouTube channel Trial & Error (試當真) to produce three online films. Shot in a realistic, dashcam-inspired style, the videos captured authentic in-car conversations between drivers and local personalities. One notable film featured feng shui master Tin Ming Yeo (楊天命) offering encouragement to a driver who discovered a renewed sense of purpose working with Uber following a kidney disease diagnosis and job loss.
