Touch ’n Go celebrates turning 30 by making invisibility its biggest brand asset

Touch ’n Go is celebrating its 30th anniversary by doing something unusual for a brand anniversary: putting itself in the background.

Rather than spotlighting its cards, app or payment technology, the Malaysian payments brand has made its own invisibility the centrepiece of its latest campaign, positioning itself as the quiet constant behind three decades of everyday journeys.

Created by The Clan with Directors Think Tank, the two-minute brand film follows a family across three generations, with Touch ’n Go subtly woven into the moments that connect them.

Don’t miss: More than just a card: How Touch ’n Go built culture into its brand

The creative approach is rooted in a simple premise: when a service has become so embedded in everyday life that people barely notice it, that invisibility can become the brand story.

The film opens with a father giving his son advice as he sets off on a journey. As the son travels, the film moves through different stages of his life, from meeting the woman he eventually marries to becoming a father himself.

Touch ’n Go appears throughout, but never takes centre stage. Toll booths are reflected in the windscreen, while the brand quietly facilitates the family’s movements through tolls and parking barriers.

By the end, the son has become a father and passes the same advice to his daughter that his father once gave him.

The brand’s role remains unchanged: always present, but rarely the thing people are thinking about.

That idea culminates in the campaign’s closing line, “30 tahun di sisi, bersama dalam setiap perjalanan” ('30 years together, sharing every journey').

Winnie Soon, director, brand management, marketing and communications at Touch ’n Go, said the campaign was about celebrating the moments the brand has enabled, rather than the products it provides.

“When we first saw The Clan's concept, we knew we'd found something special. It's not about the card or the payment. It's about the moments Touch 'n Go makes possible. Touch 'n Go is the quiet partner that's been there through all of it. That's the legacy we wanted to celebrate," said Soon.

Adriana Mohd Saleh, associate director, brand management and marketing at Touch ’n Go, added that the campaign seeks to reinforce an emotional connection with consumers after 30 years of being part of their daily routines.

“This campaign reintroduces Touch 'n Go as more than a mobility solution. It's a brand that Malaysians feel, not just use," said Adriana.

"After 30 years embedded in the nation's everyday commute, we wanted to pause and recognise our role in people's lives, seamlessly enabling their most important journeys. The film does that in a way that words simply cannot," she added.

A soundtrack that carries the nostalgia

The emotional weight of the film is further amplified by its soundtrack, Freedom’s Mulanya disini (It started here).

The song’s lyric “Sama-sama, menjejak mimpi” ('Together, pursuing a dream') becomes the emotional thread running through the film, tying together its themes of family, continuity and moving forward.

For The Clan, the choice was more than a musical one. Securing the rights to the song was seen as integral to giving the anniversary story its Malaysian cultural resonance.

Mulanya disini was a song that was worth the pursuit of its rights. The opening lines transform the entire film from a corporate anniversary moment into a nostalgic conversation that moves forward with the times. The originator of the song, Freedom, lends its voice and gives legitimacy to the narrative," explained Sandra Heung, general manager at The Clan.

The Clan said the creative process began with one question: “What is the story only Touch ’n Go can tell?” The answer was its 30-year legacy.

While newer fintech and payment players compete on features, convenience and technology, Touch ’n Go is leaning into an asset that cannot be easily replicated: three decades of accumulated trust and familiarity.

It is a strategy that also builds on the brand’s broader efforts to make a functional payments product culturally relevant, including collaborations with artists and IPs that have turned its cards into objects of cultural expression.

After three decades of helping Malaysians get where they need to go, the brand is making the case that perhaps its biggest achievement is that people rarely have to think about it at all.
