Has TNG eWallet evolved beyond a payments app?

After days of confusion, speculation and a deliberately "glitched" app icon, Touch 'n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) has finally revealed what its mysterious "new chapter" is all about.
The fintech platform has unveiled a major refresh of its app experience, as its parent company TNG Digital positions TNG eWallet beyond its payments roots and towards becoming what it calls an "everyday digital companion" for Malaysians.
The move comes as TNG Digital reaches a significant milestone in its growth journey. For the first time since its inception, non-payment businesses now contribute more than half of the company's total revenue, signalling a shift away from its original payments-centric foundation.
Don't miss: Is TNG eWallet gearing up for its biggest update yet?
According to TNG Digital, the platform today serves more than 26 million verified users, with 13.5 million Malaysians actively using the app every month. Users engage with the platform an average of twice daily, accessing services spanning financial products, travel, rewards, lifestyle offerings and merchant solutions.
To reflect this evolution, TNG eWallet has rolled out a redesigned homepage centred around a search-first experience, allowing users to access services more quickly without navigating multiple layers within the app.

Four key ecosystem hubs now take centre stage on the homepage: 'GOfinance' for financial services, 'Near me' for nearby food and beverage deals, 'Bills' for utility and recurring payments, and 'Transport' for commuting and travel needs. The bottom navigation bar has also been streamlined and redesigned for easier one-handed use.
"TNG eWallet is no longer just a payment app. Malaysians are using us to manage different parts of their everyday lives, from growing their money and travelling overseas to paying bills and earning rewards," said Alan Ni, CEO of TNG Digital.
"The strongest proof of that shift is that more than half of our revenue today comes from businesses beyond payments."
The reveal was also accompanied by a brand film, “One app, semua onz” (One app, to achieve everything). The 40-second video follows five characters, each with different goals, from growing and exploring to moving, managing and paying. At its core, it positions Touch ‘n Go eWallet as the one app that brings all these needs together seamlessly and effortlessly, whether you are on the move or simply at home.
The refresh also explained the mysterious "glitch" campaign that had dominated social media conversations earlier this week.
Speaking to A+M, a TNG Digital brands spokesperson said the cyberpunk-inspired visual treatment was intentionally designed to spark curiosity and challenge existing perceptions of the platform.
"The idea came from a simple observation: while user behaviour has evolved significantly, public perception often takes longer to catch up," the spokesperson said.
"Many Malaysians already use TNG eWallet across different aspects of their daily lives, from managing their finances to planning travel and accessing services. Yet many still associate the platform primarily with the role it first became known for."
The spokesperson added that the company intentionally disrupted one of its most recognisable brand assets, its app icon, to generate conversation and encourage users to rediscover the platform.
The teaser campaign saw TNG eWallet replace its familiar app icon with a glitched version, wipe its social media feeds across Instagram, TikTok and Xiaohongshu, and leave behind a single video carrying the message: "A new chapter begins. Coming soon."
The campaign also enlisted local creators including @ahma_alvin, Ceddy Ang, Aida Razman, Tiah Ewe Tiam and J (@isawkwardguy) to fuel discussion around the mysterious change.
According to TNG Digital, the reveal marked the beginning of a broader integrated campaign spanning digital and social content, creator collaborations, media engagement, experiential activations and on-ground experiences.
"The focus is not on individual features, but on showing how one connected platform can simplify everyday life," the spokesperson said.
As Malaysia's digital economy matures, TNG Digital believes the next phase of growth for digital platforms will be driven less by payments alone and more by how seamlessly financial services, commerce, travel and lifestyle experiences can be integrated within a single ecosystem. For TNG eWallet, the redesign represents the first step in that journey.
