Is TNG eWallet gearing up for its biggest update yet?

For those who have noticed this week, Touch ’n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) appears to be teasing a major announcement, with the fintech platform stirring curiosity through a “glitched” app icon that has sparked confusion and speculation among users.

Many netizens took to Threads to share screenshots of the change, questioning what was happening after being caught off guard. Some initially thought there was an issue with their phone screens, while others wondered if the app had been hacked.

Users who tapped on the icon quickly discovered that the app itself remained fully functional. The only thing that appeared to have changed was the icon.

The mystery doesn't end there. TNG eWallet's social media presence across Instagram, TikTok and Xiaohongshu has also undergone a makeover. The brand has replaced its profile pictures with glitched versions and wiped its social feeds clean, leaving behind a single teaser video.

The video shows the app icon glitching before the words "A new chapter begins. Coming soon." appear on screen. Comments have been disabled, adding to the intrigue. Since being posted three days ago, the video has garnered more than 221,000 views and over 4,000 likes.

To further build anticipation around the upcoming reveal, TNG eWallet has also enlisted several Malaysian content creators to join the conversation around the mysterious icon change.

Among them was grandmother-and-grandson duo @ahma_alvin, whose video playfully debated whether the glitch was the result of an upcoming update or simply a settings issue.

Meanwhile, Ceddy Ang (@ceddyornot) took a more direct approach, questioning what TNG eWallet was up to and asking why the brand would dare to secretly alter an app that has become a daily essential for many Malaysians without offering an explanation.

Other creators, including Aida Razman (@aidarazman), Tiah Ewe Tiam (@timtiah) and J (@isawkwardguy), have also weighed in, each bringing their own distinctive style to the conversation.

A+M has reached out to TNG Digital for further details on what this "new chapter" entails.

TNG is not alone in using its app icon as a teaser tool. Last year, ZUS Coffee generated buzz by temporarily replacing Kaldi, the goat herder in its logo, with its blue mascot, Blue Buddy, across its app and social channels ahead of a campaign reveal.

Duolingo is no stranger to rotating its app icon, regularly reinterpreting its Duo owl mascot in different scenarios, from sick and scared to partying, melting and even “dead.”

TNG eWallet's teaser campaign comes at a notable time for the company. In August 2025, TNG Digital, the operator of TNG eWallet, qualified as Malaysia's next unicorn after surpassing a US$1 billion valuation and achieving profitability. However, CIMB Group, TNG Digital's largest shareholder, said at the time that the company was in no rush to pursue a public listing.

More recently, in an interview with The Edge last month, TNG Digital CEO Alan Ni revealed that while discussions around a potential listing are taking place and investment bankers have approached the company, no timeline has been set. Factors such as business growth, market sentiment and capital market conditions remain key considerations.

Ni also highlighted the challenge of correcting public misconceptions about the business. Speaking to The Edge, he noted that many people still view TNG Digital primarily as a payments provider, despite payments accounting for only about half of its business. Others associate it mainly with toll and parking payments, which contribute only a small portion of revenue, or perceive it as a monopoly despite operating in a market with more than 30 e-wallet providers.
