Sunbeam Theatre to reopen in Whampoa this Saturday

The iconic Cantonese opera venue Sunbeam Theatre (新光戲院) is reopening as Sunbeam Whampoa (新光黃埔) at Whampoa Garden this Saturday (16 August), following its closure in March.

Covering around 50,000 square feet, Sunbeam Whampoa will feature four cinemas with a total of 1,200 seats, equipped with a 4K Dolby audiovisual system to offer a diverse movie-watching experience. The ticket is priced at HK$80, and there are no discounts available at this time.

The four cinemas feature six new modes, including "first round cinema" (首輪影院), which plays global and local new releases; "classic nostalgic cinema" (經典懷舊影院), which takes audiences back to the golden age of classic films and reignites past sentiments; "golden cinema" (黃金猛片影院), which highlights underrated masterpieces in Hong Kong film history; "horror cinema" (嘩鬼影院), offering exclusive late-night screenings of local horror films; "Cantonese opera" (粵劇影院), featuring morning screenings of Cantonese opera films produced by Sunbeam Theatre's chairman Lee Kui Ming (李居明); and "animation cinema" (動畫影院), which plays family-friendly animation during weekends.

During the first three days of the cinema's opening, over 20 classic films will be re-screened, including "Somewhere in Time" (時光倒流七十年), "Gone with the Wind" (亂世佳人), "The Godfather" (教父), "Rashomon" (羅生門), "The Warlord" (大軍閥), "Behind the Yellow Line" (緣份), and "Youth of Fire" (烈火青春).

Interestingly, the Japanese animated film "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle" (「鬼滅之刃」無限城篇) will have the most screenings, boasting a total of 13 showtimes, a check by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE saw.

Additionally, Sunbeam Whampoa has planned to transform the cinema into a multifunctional space, providing a small performance stage for local artists and theater groups. The lobby will host an exhibition featuring celebrity art and photography to enrich the cultural experience.

To promote the opening of Sunbeam Whampoa, an out-of-home (OOH) billboard ad has been launched outside the cross-harbour tunnel.

Founded in 1972, the Sunbeam Theatre used to be the only venue in Hong Kong to host Cantonese opera performances on a long-term basis. It witnessed the glory of classic productions such as "The Butterfly Lovers" (帝女花).

However, with the lease at its original location in North Point expiring, the Sunbeam Theatre closed its doors on 3 March. Just a month later, news emerged that the theatre would relocate to the former Golden Harvest location in Whampoa after closing due to the landlord's decision not to renew the lease.

From the Cantonese opera house in North Point to the modern arts hub in Whampoa, Sunbeam Whampoa seeks not only to continue the brand's legacy but also to craft a new chapter in Hong Kong's cultural landscape through innovative methods.
