Hong Kong-based cinema chain Golden Harvest has shut down four of its remaining outlets in the city on Sunday, marking the ninth cinema closure in Hong Kong in 2025.
According to its statement on Facebook, Golden Harvest bid farewell to its fans and moviegoers on 27 June, stating the leases of its four remaining cinemas would end on 29 June, leading to the shutdown of the entire movie chain.

“It has been our absolute pleasure to share countless unforgettable movie moments with you – filled with laughter, excitement and heartfelt emotions – at the sky, StagE, GH Galaxy and GH Taipo Cinemas over the past years. As our leases at these locations come to a close on 29 June 2025, we will be concluding our cinema operations in Hong Kong thereafter.”
The cinema chain also announced that the venues for the sky, StagE, and GH Taipo Cinemas will be leased to a new operator. “The new operator will carry forward the tradition of exceptional service, ensuring that there is no disruption to the quality services our valued cinema patrons have come to love.”
Meanwhile, GH Cinema vouchers, coupons and movie tickets will continue to be accepted and can still be used at these locations up to and including 31 August 2025.
“Additionally, we understand that our valued “GH Moviegoer” members will also be able to roll into the new operator’s membership programme with the same benefits and possibly more. The new programme shall be announced by the new operator in due course, and subject to your consent of the enrolment,” the statement added.
The post has drawn mixed reactions from netizens, with many expressing their disappointment regarding the shutdown of another movie venue, while some remained hopeful to continue visiting some of the cinemas under a new operator, a check by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE saw.

Earlier this month, Grand Ocean Cinema in Tsim Sha Tsui also closed, followed by the closure of another venue at the MegaBox shopping centre. The MegaBox branch will be replaced by a new cinema run by CineArt, due to open in July with elevated design and facilities.
Don't miss: Grand Kornhill Cinema to cease operations in May
Back in May, MCL Cinemas’ Grand Kornhill Cinema (康怡戲院) in Quarry also ceased operations. According to MCL Cinema's social platforms on 15 May, MCL Cinemas said that the closure is due to the end of tenancy. It thanked the customers for their continued support over the years, saying, “We hope to see you again at other MCL Cinemas!”
The chain previously closed its outlets at South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau and Hollywood Plaza in Diamond Hill in August and December last year.
