Hong Kong-based MCL Cinemas’ Grand Kornhill Cinema (康怡戲院) in Quarry will cease operations on 28 May, marking the fourth cinema closure in the city in 2025.

According to MCL Cinema's social platforms on 15 May, MCL Cinemas said that the closure is due to the end of tenancy. It thanked the customers for their continued support over the years, saying, “We hope to see you again at other MCL Cinemas!”

The chain previously closed its outlets at South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau and Hollywood Plaza in Diamond Hill in August and December last year.

The announcement post has received over 1,900 likes and 40 comments on Instagram, as confirmed by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE. Some netizens shared their fond memories of Grand Kornhill Cinema, while some sighed that it's "another theatre gone in Hong Kong." Meanwhile, MCL Cinemas’ Facebook post has received more than 1,500 reactions, 180 comments, and 400 shares.

Kornhill Cinema has five screening halls with a total of 706 seats, offering films in various formats, including 2D, 3D, and 4D. In 2017, the cinema underwent a significant renovation and became the first in Hong Kong to feature the "MX4D Dynamic Cinema." Earlier this January, Kornhill Cinema introduced a promotion to draw in audiences, selling standard 2D tickets for HK$50 and senior tickets for HK$30.

Established in 1982, MCL Cinemas currently manages 15 prime cinema sites and 84 screens in Hong Kong, according to its website. These include locations such as Grand Windsor Cinema in Causeway Bay, MCL Cyberport Cinema, K11 Art House MCL AIRSIDE Cinema in Kai Tak, Festival Grand Cinema in Kowloon Tong, STAR Cinema, and MCL Metro City Cinema in Tseung Kwan O.

The closure of Grand Kornhill Cinema highlights a worrying trend for Hong Kong's cinema industry, as several theatres have shut down in recent months. In April, Golden Harvest Whampoa closed, and Newport Theatre in Mongkok ended its 20-year operation on 31 March.

In early March, the Sunbeam Theatre, which had a 52-year history, officially closed its doors. Meanwhile, a new venue has been established in nearly 50,000 square feet of cinema space at Whampoa Garden, where some screening rooms will be converted into small concert halls, set to begin operations between mid-June and July.
