Sanrio turns 60 this year, and it's marking the occasion with a very artful celebration in Hong Kong.
MOSTown, France’s Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN), and Taiwanese creative team Seven Apex have teamed up with Sanrio for a special birthday celebration featuring several of the Japanese creator's most beloved characters appearing in and alongside some of the most famous artworks ever created.
The “MOSTown x Sanrio characters Christmas Galleria” features 19 first-of-a-kind art pieces from RMN's collections designed to educate, entertain, and bring smiles to both young and old fans of characters such as Hello Kitty, Little Twin Stars, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, Pompompurin, gudetama and Kuromi.
On display now and running through 17 January 2021, the MOSTown atrium has been transformed into an art museum with five different exhibitions: “Starry sky over the Rhone”, “Vincent Van Gogh Rest from Work”, “Claude Monet”, “Impressionism” and “The Grand Gallery”. The exhibitions feature a Sanrio twist on masterpieces recognisable to any art lover, from Le Foyer de la danse à l'Opéra de la rue Le Peletier to the Mona Lisa herself, complete with Hello Kitty jewellery.
The installation incorporates smart technology as well. By scanning a QR code, visitors can receive a guided audio tour and use the "AR snap" function when encountering sculptures of Hello Kitty, Little Twin Stars, My Melody and Pompompurin to take a fun interactive photo with the characters. Visitors to the mall can also redeem premium collectibles upon spending a designated amount.
