Honda bets big on nostalgia as Prelude returns in major brand reset

Honda Australia is making one of its boldest brand plays in years, relaunching the iconic Prelude with a major new campaign designed to reconnect the automaker with culture, emotion and a generation raised on its 90s legacy.
Developed by Honda’s agency village and led creatively by Special, the campaign marks the return of the Prelude in hybrid form while also signalling a broader strategic repositioning for the brand.
Rather than leaning solely on product features or electrification messaging, Honda is tapping directly into nostalgia, cultural memory and emotional storytelling.
At the centre of the campaign is The Dream Garage, a cinematic hero film directed by Justin Kurzel through Revolver, imagining a world where forgotten dreams are stored until reclaimed.
The campaign leans into Honda’s long-running “Power of Dreams” platform, positioning Prelude not simply as a new car, but as a symbolic revival of a time when automotive brands held stronger cultural meaning. Honda said the strategy reflects a larger attempt to cut through an increasingly commoditised automotive category.
“Honda is a brand that stirs emotions and evokes memories amongst Australians and Prelude is a car that’s always been innovative and with it, allowed us to dream,” Honda Australia general manager brand, marketing and digital Eva Barrett, said.
The media rollout spans broadcast, cinema, out-of-home and experiential, including major transit takeovers and an exclusive automotive partnership with Hypergram’s holographic roadshow.

The campaign also arrives as nostalgia increasingly becomes a powerful commercial lever for brands seeking emotional resonance in crowded markets.
By pairing 90s iconography, Portishead’s “Roads” and practical filmmaking craft with hybrid innovation, Honda is attempting to bridge legacy and future in one of its most ambitious Australian campaigns in recent memory.
For Special, the campaign also reinforces the agency’s growing reputation for emotionally charged brand-building work in the automotive category.
