The many meanings of independence: Brand campaigns from Indonesia

The many meanings of independence: Brand campaigns from Indonesia

Indonesia's 81st Independence Day has given brands another opportunity to tell stories about what it means to be Indonesian - but this year, many are looking beyond the usual symbols of flags, heritage and historical milestones. Instead, a growing number of campaigns are finding the meaning of independence in everyday life, from how people support one another to the opportunities they create for themselves and others.

That shift puts ordinary Indonesians at the centre of the storytelling. A rider helping a fellow motorist, a young person seeking a path out of unemployment, neighbourhoods coming together to celebrate and people choosing composure over conflict all become expressions of national identity.

From CHAGEE and SariWangi drawing on Indonesian culture and togetherness, to Corsa and Jago Coffee connecting independence with solidarity and economic opportunity, these campaigns show how brands are giving the 17 August moment their own contemporary interpretation.

1. CHAGEE - Wonders of the archipelago

CHAGEE marked Independence Day with a localised collaboration with Bali-based lifestyle brand Pithecanthropus, supported by its film "Wonders of the archipelago". The campaign connects tea culture with Indonesian craftsmanship through locally inspired flavours, patterns and everyday products. The collection features motifs including the horse, Camellia sinensis flower, chrysanthemum and traditional pandan-leaf weaving, across scarves, bags, embroidered pins and horse charms.

The campaign also introduced seasonal drinks inspired by Indonesian flavours, including pandan, coconut and gula malaka. The work builds on CHAGEE's localisation strategy since entering Indonesia in 2025, with its outlets incorporating work from Indonesian artists and craftspeople, while store designs in different cities draw on local architectural heritage.

2. AQUA - Kaum adem

AQUA used Independence Day to expand its "Kaum adem" platform, positioning the Indonesian idea of staying calm and composed as a distinctive brand territory. The film looks at Indonesians across different periods and social backgrounds, portraying adem as a mindset of remaining positive, composed and legowo in the face of everyday challenges.

The campaign also marks a visual departure for AQUA, with director Sim F opting for a more realistic depiction of everyday Indonesian life rather than the brand's traditionally polished aesthetic. Shot in Bali and Jakarta, the campaign spans film, out-of-home, digital, social and on-ground activations, connecting the brand's mineral water proposition with a broader idea of clarity and resilience.

3. Gudang Garam - Tunjukkan kekuatan bangsa

Gudang Garam's 60-second film "Tunjukkan kekuatan bangsa" shifts its Independence Day storytelling towards the people who embody Indonesia's strength. Following a photographer travelling across the country, the film brings together fishermen, a Gudang Garam employee, contemporary dancers, hikers and other Indonesians to show different expressions of national strength.

The film connects Indonesia's cultural inheritance with its evolving identity, with several scenes shot in Kediri, where Gudang Garam was founded. A flame travelling across the film becomes a visual link to the brand's "Sebarkan nyalamu" tagline, representing how spirit and strength can move between individuals, generations and communities.

4. Telkomsel - Sepenuh hati memaknai

Telkomsel's "Sepenuh hati memaknai" encourages Indonesians to look beyond the annual celebration and consider how independence is experienced in everyday life. The campaign focuses on moments of caring, supporting others, connecting, growing and contributing, suggesting that independence can be found in ordinary experiences rather than only national ceremonies.

The idea also reinforces Telkomsel's role as a connectivity provider, linking the ability to connect and access opportunities with Indonesia's broader progress. Developed by FCN Creative - Flock and directed by Adhi Reksa, the campaign follows Telkomsel's previous Independence Day work while giving the brand's connectivity proposition a more personal and reflective angle.

5. Jago Coffee - Merdeka dari nganggur

Jago Coffee takes a more pointed approach with "Merdeka dari nganggur", using Independence Day to address youth unemployment and perceptions around street-level work. The campaign presents becoming a Jago Coffee 'Jagoan' - selling coffee on wheels - not as a fallback, but as a potential route towards pride, self-reliance and economic independence.

A documentary-style film forms the centre of the campaign, using an Instagram Reels-first approach to tell grounded stories around young people and their challenges. Developed by Ads Kreasi, the campaign extends into social and interactive content, with the call to action "Ambil peluang, gabung jadi Jagoan" inviting young job seekers to see entrepreneurship as an opportunity rather than a last resort.

6. Corsa - Warisan yang membanggakan

Corsa's "Warisan yang membanggakan" moves the idea of Indonesian heritage from historical landmarks and cultural symbols onto the roads. The film focuses on everyday acts of gotong royong, including a rider helping push a stranger's broken motorbike, motorists making way for an ambulance and one rider alerting another to a forgotten kickstand.

Through these small interactions, Corsa presents togetherness and solidarity as a living part of Indonesian identity. Developed by creative agency Lup Jakarta and produced by Flow Studio, the campaign links that spirit to the brand's own focus on tyre performance and the resilience of Indonesian riders.

7. SariWangi - Waktunya ngeteh Indonesia

SariWangi's "Waktunya ngeteh Indonesia" uses tea as a way to celebrate Indonesia's diversity and shared sense of togetherness. Its film showcases different Independence Day traditions across the country, highlighting the many ways communities celebrate while sharing a common sense of national pride.

The campaign extends into neighbourhood competitions, tea plantations and a public celebration at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. SariWangi also recognised the communities and farmers within its ecosystem, while the campaign marks a new chapter for the brand following its acquisition by Savoria Group earlier this year.
