The business of ‘I do’: How Astro turned Bella and Syed Saddiq's nuptials into content gold
share on
Astro is turning Bella Astillah and Syed Saddiq's nuptials into content gold, bringing brands along for the ride through a multi-platform wedding franchise spanning an eight-episode series, live broadcasts and digital content.
Jasmine, Kitsui, Sime Darby and GWM, alongside a brand in the financial services category, have come on board across the wider “Walimatulurus Bella Astillah & Syed Saddiq” (BASS) franchise, with integrations designed to fit naturally into the couple's story.
In conversation with A+M, Benjamin Woo, head of group marketing at Astro said that the eight-episode series is only one part of a larger, multi-platform content journey.
“What we offered to brands was to be part of the story from the build-up of anticipation to the moments that bring Bella and Syed Saddiq closer to their fans and the wider community,” Woo added.

The proposition is designed to move brands beyond conventional sponsorship by giving them opportunities to participate in a story audiences are already invested in.
“Beyond sponsorships, branded content and multi-platform integrations, it is about creating opportunities for brands to build an emotional connection with the community at different moments throughout the journey," said Woo.
Rather than being limited to visibility within the programme, brands can explore how they can add value to the wider content experience and become part of a story rooted in connection, respect, faith and shared values.
Astro did not disclose specific viewership targets or figures for the series and wedding broadcasts.
From engagement to brand integration
Astro had been developing its partnership with the couple well before the wedding broadcasts. Discussions began in July 2025, when Astro first explored content opportunities with the pair. By October that year, after their wedding plans were confirmed, the collaboration had become a formalised media partnership, with Astro serving as the exclusive media partner to shape and tell their story across its ecosystem.
The engagement campaign, “#BellaSyedYes”, demonstrated how brands could be incorporated into different parts of the couple's journey. Their joint appearance on ERA's 3 Pagi ERA, alongside brand integrations with THE RAW, was supported by on-air segments and TikTok livestreams that helped build audience familiarity.
Other partnerships were woven into specific moments. GWM's SUV featured as Syed Saddiq's vehicle of choice when he arrived at the engagement ceremony, while Kitsui, whose brand ambassador is Bella, appeared across multiple touchpoints. Education savings plan Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (SSPN) was also featured in Syed Saddiq's 'hantaran', or engagement gift, for Bella's children Ayden and Ara.
The campaign brought together exclusive interviews, reality-led formats and brand partnerships, with coverage extending across Astro Gempak, ERA FM, MeleTOP, Borak Seeni, Sooka Malaysia, Official Hlive and Astro Malaysia, alongside the broadcaster's streaming platforms.
For Astro, the wedding franchise expanded that approach from the engagement into a longer sequence of content and live events. The eight-episode BASS series began airing on 6 October on Astro Ria (Channel 104), with episodes also available on demand via Astro GO and Sooka.
The couple's 'akad nikah', or marriage solemnisation, was broadcast live on 10 October across Astro Ria, Astro Prima, Astro 30 and Astro AWANI, as well as Astro GO, Sooka, Astro Gempak, Astro Malaysia and ERA. Their wedding reception on 18 October was carried on Astro Prima and Astro 30, alongside digital coverage on Astro GO, Sooka, Astro Gempak, Astro AWANI, Astro Malaysia and ERA.
This distribution strategy gives Astro multiple opportunities to reach viewers throughout the story, while allowing brands to participate across different formats and touchpoints rather than relying on a single broadcast.
Turning personal milestones into content properties
Astro's approach sits within a wider trend among Malaysian media owners seeking to turn celebrity milestones into longer-form content. Unifi TV, for instance, partnered Fattah Amin and Amira Othman on “Setulus Takdir: Fattah & Amira”, a 10-episode documentary series centred on their marriage solemnisation in October 2025.
Astro has also described celebrity-led storytelling as a longer-term strategy. In an earlier interview with A+M, Raqim Ahmad, vice president for entertainment and drama at Astro, said the broadcaster had been refining this approach since 2008, with the aim of creating emotionally resonant experiences that connect across generations.
For BASS, the potential audience extends beyond people who already follow Bella's entertainment career or Syed Saddiq's public and political life. Astro is positioning the wedding as a shared national moment, drawing on the broad appeal of a relationship that has attracted public attention.
“Beyond viewership numbers, our ambition is to create a moment that brings the nation together. We envision Malaysians of every background - Malay, Chinese, Indian and beyond - tuning in to the same broadcast, with families gathering to celebrate love and witness the union of two hearts as Bella Astillah and Syed Saddiq begin their life together,” Woo said, adding that:
Whether they have followed Bella’s journey, know Syed Saddiq through his public life, or are simply drawn to a story that has captured the nation’s attention, there is something universal about two people choosing to build a life together.
In all, Woo said the wider aim was to sustain audience interest across formats while making the couple's story accessible to viewers through different platforms.
“By bringing together episodic storytelling, live broadcasts and digital content, we can sustain audience interest throughout the journey and make the experience accessible across multiple touchpoints,” he said.
