Star Media Group has appointed Choong Tuck Oon (pictured) and Wong You Fong as new independent and non-executive directors. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Star Media said both appointments were effective from 1 June 2017.
The company said Choong, 59 specialises in technology, strategy and transformation. He is active in ASEAN’s digital start-up ecosystem, where he is regularly called upon to advise corporate professionals, universities and startups on innovations, fintech, media-tech, ecommerce, data analytics and new-age technologies.
According to Star Media, Choong was with Accenture for 24 years, where he retired as senior partner in the Asia Pacific financial services practice. He has also led strategic initiatives with more than 20 large domestic and global banks and insurers in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Choong is currently an independent non-executive director on the boards of Credit Guarantee Corp Malaysia, FIDE Forum Malaysia and NTUC Income Insurance Co-operative Ltd Singapore. Prior to this, he served on various boards within RHB Banking Group, including RHB Islamic Bank, RHB Indochina Bank and RHB Private Equity Holdings.
Wong, 46, is a practising lawyer with 21 years of experience and is currently with Messrs Wong You Fong & Associates.
These two appointments come after Star Media suspended two of its top editors recently for a controversial front page and prayer image published on 27 May 2017.
