R/GA brings mobile practice to Asia Pacific

R/GA has expanded its mobile practice to Asia Pacific. Led out of Singapore by technology director Rollen Gomes (pictured), and augmented by its tech hub based in Indonesia, the expansion is part of the agency's growth plan to develop transformative mobile products for brands locally. It is also part of R/GA's plan to better serve markets on a global scale.

R/GA's mobile practice sets out to design and build category-defining mobile products and services through both native and hybrid technologies, and through this growth in Asia Pacific, R/GA will continue to cultivate best-in-class talent and deliver mobile experiences.

Gomes is the lead engineer behind experiential work such as Shiseido Professional, Year with Uber, and Nike Basketball Experiences. He will work closely with Katrina Bekessy, global lead for the mobile practice at R/GA. "Mobile is everyone’s primary device. However, the democracy of experiences and technology on mobile is not yet equally distributed. We’re interested in using that as an opportunity to drive more experiences for brands, and in doing so, make a more human future for everyone," Gomes said.

The tech hub in Indonesia was set up two years ago by Tuomas Peltoniemi, EVP MD of R/GA Asia Pacific, with the vision of enabling accessible tech for businesses and brands. "The ability to make is key in our industry. And creating this Tech Hub and mobile practice enables us to do just that - to be consultants who make," he said.

Earlier this year, R/GA’s Singapore and Indonesia teams designed and built Zig, a mobile lifestyle-as-a-service by ComfortDelGro. Built from the ground up using Flutter, it was built once and deployed twice for iOS and Android, powered by a lean and real-time data-driven technology stack. This work follows other mobile dev projects R/GA has done, such as SONIC Drive-In mobile ordering, the Nike+ fitness mobile experience, and next, the mobile-only bank from Bradesco.

Dorothy Peng, VP, MD of R/GA Singapore, said over the past three years, it has worked with many iconic brands to build out their mobile experiences, and it has only seen that demand increase multifold this year. "Setting this practice up officially allows us to invest in the right talent to cater to our client’s rising digital demands," she added. Peng was promoted to her current role earlier this year and continues to lead innovation consulting, brand design and consulting, and product design.
