OLDTOWN White Coffee rejects non-halal claims, mulls legal action

OLDTOWN White Coffee has rejected all rumours and claims that its products contain pork, addressing allegations made in a WhatsApp video that has apparently circulated on social media channels.

The company reassured consumers in a statement that all its premises have held the Sijil Pengesahan Halal Malaysia (SPHM) from authorities since 2010. "Our businesses take the Halal certification and regulations very seriously, and we ensure that all the ingredients in our food and beverages do not contain any traces of pork or non-halal elements," it added.

The company said it is seeking legal advice and will not hesitate to act against individuals who make false allegations to the fullest extent of the law. "We urge and seek the help of netizens to stop the spread of these false claims," it added.

Meanwhile, a visit by local representatives from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to the outlets in question for an inspection also confirmed that the accusations are false.

At the same time, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) also clarified in a Facebook post that claims of OLDTOWN White Coffee being non-halal because its curry noodles contain pork is false. It also urged the community to be more aware of the facts before spreading fake news.

Separately last September, JAKIM also had to shut down claims that Tealive is non-halal, after a message circulating on WhatsApp claimed that Tealive's drinks contain alcohol and porcine ingredients. JAKIM affirmed in a Facebook post back then that Tealive is a valid holder of the SPHM. It also advised consumers to be more cautious before disseminating information from unverified sources concerning halal issues without consulting the relevant authorities.
