Matahari Department Store rebrands as MDS Retailing to reflect multi-concept strategy

Matahari Department Store has formally changed its corporate name to MDS Retailing, signalling a broader strategic shift towards a multi-concept retail network.
The rebranding applies strictly at the corporate level and does not affect customer-facing operations. The company confirmed that its existing stores, formats, and brand identities – including Matahari – will remain unchanged, signalling continuity in consumer experience even as the business evolves behind the scenes.
With more than 60 years in Indonesia’s retail sector, the company operates over 140 stores across nearly 80 cities. The new identity positions the group to extend beyond its department store roots and scale a broader mix of retail concepts targeting different consumer cohorts.

Its portfolio now spans multiple formats. Matahari Department Store continues to anchor the business as a mass-market destination for family fashion and lifestyle needs. Alongside it, SUKO focus on minimalist, functional essentials, while ZES targets urban consumers with a contemporary aesthetic. MU+KU, meanwhile, introduces a curated multibrand approach designed to emphasise discovery-led shopping experiences.
The company is also reinforcing its stable of private labels – including Nevada, COLE, Connexion, and Little M – across categories ranging from everyday basics to more trend-driven apparel.
The shift to MDS Retailing signals an intent to integrate these concepts into a more cohesive ecosystem, allowing the group to serve a wider spectrum of consumer needs while building resilience in an increasingly fragmented retail landscape.
“The transition to MDS Retailing marks our transformation into a multi-concept retail network, moving beyond a single-format business to deliver more relevant concepts and experiences. We remain committed to innovating, adapting to changing consumer needs, and creating sustainable value for all stakeholders,” said Monish Mansukhani, CEO of MDS Retailing.
