KFC and Mister Potato cook up a crispy little heist

KFC and Mister Potato cook up a crispy little heist

Merdeka and Malaysia Day are all about unity, and KFC Malaysia and Mister Potato are putting their own spin on it by teaming up for the first time in a collaboration that turns an unexpected brand pairing into a playful mystery.

The two brands have launched the limited-time KFC x Mister Potato Series, bringing together KFC's fried chicken and Mister Potato's signature crunch in what they call ‘Gabungan terangup’ (‘the crunchiest combo’), with the collaboration designed to tap into 'rasa Malaysia' (‘taste of Malaysia’).

Developed in collaboration with advertising agency VML Malaysia, the campaign connects two Malaysian icons through an integrated brand experience.

Instead of revealing the collaboration outright, the campaign invites Malaysians to piece together clues before the big reveal, using secret-agent communications, surveillance-style teasers and mission-inspired storytelling to build intrigue around the crossover.

The integrated campaign spans film, digital, social, retail and in-store experiences, taking the collaboration beyond a product launch and turning the reveal into an interactive journey for consumers.

VML brought its capabilities across brand experience, customer experience and commerce into the campaign, connecting the idea across the journey from awareness to purchase.

The campaign was also designed around how Malaysians discover, share and celebrate stories together, with touchpoints extending from the mystery-led teaser phase to the KFC app, restaurants and retail.

The collaboration comes to life through two limited-time KFC creations. The 'Spicy potato crisp crunch' pairs KFC's signature crispy chicken with Mister Potato 'Syok wave fiery fried chicken chips', while its 1-pc combo comes with rice, adding a familiar Malaysian touch.

There is also the 'Spicy potato crisp burger', which gives KFC's iconic Zinger a crunchy upgrade by layering the chicken with Mister Potato 'Syok wave fiery fried chicken chips'.

The KFC x Mister Potato Series is available from 12 August at participating KFC restaurants nationwide via dine-in, takeaway, self-collect, delivery and the KFC app.

The collaboration will also extend into retail, with Mister Potato launching its Syok Wave x KFC Cheezy Wedges Flavour Chips for the Malaysia Day season.

Inspired by KFC Malaysia's much-loved cheezy wedges, the limited-edition flavour brings the rich, cheesy taste of the iconic side to Mister Potato's signature chips. The chips will be available nationwide at selected retailers and at KFC from early September, while stocks last.

Hanim Mazam, chief marketing officer of KFC Malaysia, said “Malaysians can never get enough of flavours that are packed with bold spices, fiery heat and satisfying crunch. With a deep understanding of Malaysian tastes, we knew Mister Potato was the perfect partner to create new and unexpected flavour experiences for our fans."

“KFC Cheezy Wedges is already a taste Malaysians know and love, so in true Mister Potato style, we decided to give it our own crunchy twist,” added How Yuan Yi, chief marketing officer of MAMEE-Double Decker.

Meanwhile, Karen Koay, head of digital experience and CX at VML said that “When two powerhouse brands collide, the story needs to resonate far beyond a new flavour campaign. By bringing together VML’s capabilities across brand experience, customer experience, and commerce, we were able to turn this iconic launch into an immersive story — from the mystery heist teaser phase right down to the frictionless purchase moment on the KFC app, in-store and in retail."

The collaboration builds on KFC Malaysia's wider push towards localised brand experiences. In late July, the brand launched its first immersive experience celebrating its five-decade heritage and Original Recipe chicken.

While that activation looked back at KFC's history in Malaysia, the Mister Potato collaboration takes a more playful approach, using a familiar local pairing, a mystery-led campaign and multiple consumer touchpoints to create a new experience around the Merdeka and Malaysia Day season.
