KFC Malaysia turns its iconic recipe into a multi-sensory adventure

KFC Malaysia is inviting consumers to step inside its iconic original recipe with "ZON ORI KFC", the brand's first immersive experience celebrating more than five decades of heritage in the country.
Held from 30 July to 2 August at MyTOWN Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur, the four-day activation brought together interactive experiences, multi-sensory storytelling and exclusive merchandise to celebrate KFC's Original recipe chicken and signature sides, including whipped potato and coleslaw.
The activation is designed to spotlight not only the brand's menu, but also the rituals and traditions Malaysians have built around KFC since the chain opened its first restaurant in the country in 1973. Over the decades, the brand said consumers have developed their own ways of enjoying KFC, from pairing their favourite sides to creating personal eating rituals shared across generations.

At the heart of the experience was a 270-degree immersive room, where visitors were taken on a multi-sensory journey combining large-scale visuals, an original soundscape and the signature aroma of KFC's Original recipe chicken.
Beyond the immersive installation, visitors could explore several interactive zones inspired by the brand's best-known menu items. Guests were invited to vote for their preferred way of enjoying KFC's signature sides as part of its "Cara makan Ori" experience, personalise their own KFC bucket with a printed photo, and customise a limited-edition reversible bucket hat using exclusive heat-pressed patches.
To encourage participation, KFC also gave away 1,973 snack plates daily to members who completed all the ORI zones.
Fans who were unable to attend the activation were encouraged to join the campaign online by sharing their own "Cara makan Ori" on Instagram using #CaraOriKFC and tagging @kfcmalaysia for a chance to win exclusive campaign merchandise.
The experience was created in partnership with VML, with the agency combining immersive design, interactive experiences and consumer participation to transform KFC's heritage into an experiential brand platform.
"Since 1973, KFC has been part of Malaysians' lives, bringing people together through our original recipe chicken and signature sides. Over the years, as they share their precious moments with us, we've also seen fans make KFC their own – from crispy chicken skin with creamy whipped potato, to crisp coleslaw in between butterscotch bun, to mixing everything together with colonel rice… Every fan has their own #CaraOriKFC," said Hanim Mazam, chief marketing officer, KFC Malaysia
She added, “This experience is a celebration of our iconic flavours and a tribute to our fans, whose personal rituals, memories and love for KFC have made the brand a part of Malaysian culture. We’re humbled to bring these moments to life, and to celebrate the tastes and traditions that continue to make KFC a Malaysian favourite.”

In tandem, Karen Koay, head of digital experience and CX, VML, said, "At VML, our goal was to translate KFC’s iconic heritage into a world-class brand experience that feels meaningful, immersive and human-centric. As one of Malaysia’s most loved brands, KFC holds a unique place in the hearts of consumers, and we wanted to create an experience that reflects the strength of that connection."
"By bringing together brand and customer experience, we created a journey that allows fans to see, hear, feel and engage with the legacy that has made KFC the number one best tasting fried chicken in Malaysia based on research conducted by YouGov," she added.
The activation follows KFC Malaysia's continued push towards experience-led and culturally resonant marketing. In June, the brand celebrated Parents' Day with "Love in translation", a campaign created with VML Malaysia that drew on the familiar way Malaysian parents express affection through actions rather than words.
Spanning both Mother's Day and Father's Day, the campaign combined physical brand experiences with app-driven commerce initiatives. It introduced the limited-edition "Beg mak-na sayang" (A wordplay on "meaning" and "mother" in Malay, translating to "a bag full of love") canvas bag collection, featuring familiar phrases that many Malaysians associate with maternal care.
The campaign was also supported by digital content featuring local personalities Elaine Ying, Kirthanah Devi and Yana Azlee alongside their mothers, sharing stories about the role food and family meals have played in shaping their relationships.
