HKJC and Volleyball Nations League HK empower communities through volleyball

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has partnered with the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China, to empower communities through volleyball. As the official community partner of the 2025 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Hong Kong, the club aims to provide opportunities for everyone to enjoy the thrill of volleyball.

This partnership forms part of the HKJC's broader charitable strategy, made possible through its unique integrated business model where racing and responsible wagering generate tax revenue, charity funding and employment opportunities for Hong Kong.

Through these volleyball community programmes, students, underprivileged groups, and people with disabilities gain unique opportunities to experience the excitement of volleyball, both on and off the court.

This year’s volleyball community programmes are engaging over 11,000 members of the public through various activities. Over 120 volunteers have been trained to assist with tournament operations, while over 6,000 participants - including students, underprivileged residents and visually impaired individuals - watched practice sessions of the China female volleyball national team.

A further 5,000 students, underprivileged residents and people with disabilities (including those using audio-description services) have received complimentary access to live matches during the five-day event, from 18 to 22 June.

The tournament also features pre-match performances by individuals with physical disabilities, students and participating organisations, allowing audiences to appreciate different cultural traditions through volleyball. In the Central Square of Kai Tak Sports Park, six international booths staffed by students from eight local schools and organisations have been set up to share local Hong Kong culture.

Meanwhile, local schools will take part in sitting volleyball sessions designed to increase awareness and participation in para sport. During the VNL, there is a sitting volleyball experience booth, enabling the public to explore the challenges of sitting volleyball while promoting a deeper understanding of the difficulties faced by individuals with disabilities.

On 18 June, the tournament’s opening ceremony was held at Kai Tak Arena. In recognition of the Club’s ongoing support for volleyball and community sports, Club steward Silas Yang was presented with a volleyball signed by members of the China Women’s National Team by Volleyball Association president Wilfred Ng.

Last month, HKJC approved a cumulative funding of HK$678 million through its Charities Trust to support JC JoyAge, which aims to expand its community-based mental health support services to a primary care level.

This initiative addresses the pressing societal need for mental health support, as HKJC cited a survey showing that about one in seven people aged between 16 and 75 in Hong Kong suffers from anxiety, depression, or other common mood disorders.
