HK open to indoor car racing at Kai Tak Stadium

Indoor car racing could one day come to the Kai Tak Stadium, said Hong Kong's tourism chief. Speaking on TVB’s programme On the record (講清講楚), secretary for culture, sports and tourism, Rosanna Law said discussions are being held about holding indoor car racing events at the main stadium of the Kai Tak Sports Park.

Currently, the government is open to the idea, provided that it is safe, commercially viable, and can deliver an exciting experience for the public. As for the specific type of racing, Law said it would certainly not be Formula One (F1) events.

Unlike the Hong Kong Stadium, where the grass pitch is fixed and its uses are limited, Kai Tak main stadium has turf that can be removed. This frees up the venue to lay different surfaces, allowing for a greater variety of activities, she added.

More information would be released should the proposal proceed.

Law also pushed back on claims that the number of sporting events at Kai Tak Sports Park has fallen short of targets, saying last year was an “observation period” and therefore not subject to performance benchmarks.

She added that metrics will only be counted from this year, and said the calculation method is under review. For instance, a one-day football match is currently recorded as a single event day, despite requiring additional time for preparations such as turf installation. The overall significance of events should also be factored in, she said.

The Kai Tak main stadium welcomed nearly two million visitors and earned HK$200 million in its first nine months of operation, bringing clear economic benefits, according to Law.

Meanwhile, Art Basel Hong Kong, held from 27 to 29 March, drew over 91,000 attendees and boosted the city’s tourism, arts, and retail sectors. Law noted that the government has reached a five-year agreement with Art Basel to deepen cooperation, which is important because the fair and related events can create many jobs.

The HKTB is the first tourism organisation to seal a deal of this kind with Art Basel. As part of the partnership agreement, HKTB will be a show partner of Art Basel. Over the next three years, the HKTB will bring the city’s culture to a global stage by taking part in four annual Art Basel shows worldwide – in Paris, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Basel and staging an immersive experience in the show.
