Former PETRONAS marketing chief Syed Zainal joins DNeX

Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohd Tahir, former PETRONAS VP of downstream marketing, has joined Dagang NeXchange (DNex) as group MD effective 1 October. Syed Zainal (pictured) was previously apppointed as the group's independent non-executive director on 1 July this year. DNeX is a service provider in Malaysia's trade facilitation and energy sector. Founded in 1970, its core businesses stem into a variety of sectors such as IT and eservices, upstream oil and gas and equipment supply and maintenance.

Syed Zainal retired from his role at PETRONAS in July this year. He began his career as a project engineer with PETRONAS Gas before joining Petroliam Nasional in 1992 as a senior executive of the company's corporate planning and international business development unit. He then left to join HICOM Holdings in 1995, where he assumed various senior positions in the company. Syed Zainal also worked at Perodua and PROTON.

Chairman Abd Rahman Mamat said the appointment is part of efforts to drive the Group’s business in response to changing economic conditions with fresh new ideas. The appointment also comes as it seeks to build a performance-based culture that leads to value creation for shareholders.

"It is imperative that we attract high calibre candidates with deep industry experience to the Group’s Board and management team. We believe Syed Zainal has what it takes to lead the Group to greater heights. He brings large corporate and public company experience with proven track record of success in various industries, and this is vital to ensure DNeX’s business growth moving forward,” he added. Meanwhile, DNeX also announced the redesignation of Mohd Azhar Mohd Yusof as the Group’s executive director, group corporate services effective 1 October.
