Following an unpredictable year that saw a pandemic, election drama, global social unrest and a rescheduled Olympic games, global news monitoring service and search engine Dow Jones Factiva has revealed the top five trending keywords across the Asian news market in 2020. The research covered Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, India and Thailand.
Without further ado, these keywords were:
- Lockdown
- Face Mask
- Social Distancing
- Disinformation
- Tokyo Olympics
A few interesting statistics came out of the research as well.
The term "lockdown" reached its peak in April, as many government safety measures began to go into effect around the globe. In total, it was mentioned more than 219,000 times by regional media throughout 2020. "Social distancing" was essentially a non-existent term before 2020; since March, regional media mentioned the term around 75,000 times. India, South Korea, and China were listed as the top users of the term, respectively.
The term "disinformation" has been associated throughout the decade with Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, but in 2020 it was most often used in association with the COVID-19 pandemic.
And aa for the Tokyo Olympics, the postponement of the games plummeted after March, though the term continued to find its way into headlines about the costs associated with postponement.
