Deliveroo HK to donate 80,000 meals to HongKongers facing food insecurity

Deliveroo has unveiled a new goal to donate over 80,000 meals to residents facing food insecurity across Hong Kong in the next 12 months, as part of its global Full Life campaign to fight hunger. The new goal builds on Deliveroo’s partnership with local NGO Feeding Hong Kong which has delivered over 500,000 meals across Hong Kong and raised more than HK$2.7 million since 2020 via Deliveroo’s in-app donation feature.

Deliveroo will roll out its in-app donation feature across 10 markets, including Hong Kong, allowing customers to donate via the Deliveroo app with all proceeds going to local charities dedicated to fighting hunger.

This comes as government data showed that food inflation in Hong Kong has more than doubled during the past year, with an annual rate of 3.8% in 2022, up from 1.7% in 20211 . Rising food prices have been one of the biggest contributors to food insecurity in the city. Committed to reducing food waste and feeding charities, Feeding Hong Kong collects surplus stock from food companies and sorts and stores it before redistributing it to multiple charities across the city.

The company has also hosted food drives that enabled HongKongers to give back to their local neighbourhoods with more convenience at various Editions sites and rallied together the business community to participate in a specific workplace food campaign where employees donated staple foods in exchange for the chance to win free delivery services. Hop, Deliveroo’s grocery delivery service, has also embraced the spirit of giving by donating excess food since its debut last July. The company has also volunteered over 200 hours with Feeding Hong Kong, with Deliveroo staff visiting its warehouse to assist in the packaging of donated food.

Kicking off spring with a charitable initiative, Deliveroo’s city-wide food truck event included a pledge to donate meals to St. James’ Settlement, which provides diversified services to target beneficiaries including underprivileged families and the elderly living alone. During the nearly month-long event, Deliveroo donated a meal to the charity for every food truck event photo that was uploaded to Instagram with specific hashtags.

All these initiatives are part of a new worldwide push, which will see Deliveroo commit to helping provide four million meals globally to its charity partners to help feed people facing hunger. The global network of 10 charities in 10 different markets marks an important expansion of the company’s Full Life campaign and its longstanding commitment to supporting local communities and delivering food to those who need it most.

Andrew Hui, general manager of Deliveroo Hong Kong, said, “At Deliveroo, we want to be a force for good in the communities in which we work, and I am pleased we are partnering with Feeding Hong Kong to support Hong Kongers facing food insecurity."

"Together with our fantastic customers, restaurant and grocery partners, and riders, we want to play our part in helping to tackle food insecurity and hunger in Hong Kong and around the globe,” Hui added.

Gabrielle Kirstein, CEO of Feeding Hong Kong, said, “Thanks to our long-term partnership with Deliveroo, we’ve been able to raise donations amounting to over HK$2.7 million and provide over 500,000 meals while avoiding over 300,000kg of CO2e emissions – what a contribution to the community and environment during a critical time!. It’s no secret that in recent years Hong Kong has grappled with higher food prices and significant job losses as a result of the pandemic. This has led to more of our neighbours needing food assistance. ”
