Burger King to shut The Peak branch by end of August

Fast-food chain Burger King is shutting the Peak branch by end of August, with only one remaining store operating at Hong Kong International Airport.

Burger King’s franchisee, SSP Hong Kong, told Sing Tao Daily that the Peak branch will cease operations on 31 August, while the airport branch will continue normal operations.

To mark the closure and thank loyal customers, Burger King is offering a limited-time discount at its Peak outlet this week. Customers are encouraged to check the brand’s official channels for more information.

News of the closure initially surfaced online, when a self-proclaimed part-time employee of Burger King commented on a video from the YouTube channel "車cam人," stating:

“I can tell you that the Peak store will close down on 31 August. Only the Burger King at the airport will remain in the whole of Hong Kong. Soon you might need a plane ticket to eat there.”

The comment sparked a wave of reactions from netizens. While some expressed shock, others noted that recent visits to the Peak outlet revealed sparse patronage, with many people seemingly using the space for air conditioning rather than dining.

Burger King has had a tumultuous history in Hong Kong. The brand first entered the market in the 1980s, but exited in the 1990s. It re-entered the city in 2003 and, at its peak, operated over 20 locations.

However, after the 2015 liquidation of its then-franchisee Kin Mei Bo (健味堡), five outlets—including those in Wan Chai, Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei, Wong Tai Sin, and Tseung Kwan O—were shuttered. Since then, only two locations remained, operated by SSP Hong Kong: The Peak and the airport.
