French mobility platform BlaBlaCar has officially launched in Indonesia, marking its first entry into Southeast Asia as the company accelerates a global expansion strategy centred on shared mobility, affordability and sustainability.

The launch forms part of BlaBlaCar's largest international expansion in a decade, extending the platform into 20 new markets across Southeast Asia, Latin America, Europe and North Africa. The rollout brings the company's global footprint to 41 countries.

Indonesia is one of five Southeast Asian markets joining the network alongside Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, as the company looks to capitalise on growing demand for affordable intercity travel.

Unlike ride-hailing services, BlaBlaCar does not operate its own vehicle fleet. Instead, the platform connects drivers with empty seats to passengers travelling in the same direction, allowing them to share fuel and toll costs while reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road.

The company believes the model is well suited to Indonesia, where rising transport costs and heavy traffic congestion continue to strain household budgets and productivity.

According to Indonesia's statistics agency, transport was the largest contributor to inflation in April 2026, recording 0.99% inflation and contributing 0.12 percentage points to the country's overall inflation rate of 0.13%. Higher airfares and fuel prices were among the key drivers.

BlaBlaCar said its cost-sharing model enables drivers to offset a significant portion of travel expenses while providing passengers with a more affordable alternative for intercity journeys, particularly on routes underserved by public transport.

On average, each trip on the platform carries 2.1 passengers, helping drivers recover more than half of their fuel and toll costs. To prevent commercial use, the platform applies an automated fare cap based on route distance and local fuel prices, ensuring contributions cover operational costs rather than generate profit.

The Indonesia launch comes amid rising global interest in shared mobility. Between March and June 2026, more than 800,000 new drivers joined BlaBlaCar's worldwide community as consumers increasingly sought ways to reduce travel expenses.

"Our model works because it solves an economic reality for the consumer," said Nicolas Brusson, co-founder and CEO of BlaBlaCar. "Last year alone, our drivers saved over €568 million in travel expenses. As we scale into 20 new markets, we are unlocking considerable and untapped purchasing power for millions of travellers and commuters."

Globally, the company sees Southeast Asia as a natural extension of its operations following strong growth in India, where BlaBlaCar reported 47% year-on-year growth in 2025 and reached 19 million passengers, making it the platform's largest carpooling market.

"Our mission is to optimise every empty seat on the road," Brusson said. "The growth we have observed over recent months demonstrates that drivers find the cost-sharing model more relevant than ever. And we are excited to see new communities form in new countries, united by this same concept."

Beyond affordability, BlaBlaCar is also positioning its service as a sustainability initiative. By increasing vehicle occupancy, the platform aims to reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption and carbon emissions while making better use of existing transport capacity.

It also incorporates community ratings, reviews and moderation systems designed to improve safety and transparency for both drivers and passengers.

With around 30 million active members globally each year, BlaBlaCar is betting that Indonesia's growing appetite for digital services and affordable mobility will make carpooling an increasingly mainstream option for intercity travel.
