AirAsia invites HKers to record excitement about its new route

AirAsia has launched a guerilla marketing stunt inviting Hongkongers to record their excitement about its new route connecting Bangkok (Don Mueang), Hong Kong, and Okinawa, Japan.

This marks the first time Thai AirAsia operates a Fifth Freedom service via Hong Kong. The new service will operate daily (seven flights per week), flying directly from Don Mueang, Bangkok, with a short stopover in Hong Kong to pick up and drop off passengers before heading to Okinawa, Japan.

To promote the new route launch, guests were invited to join for an electrifying experience at the “Haisai Okinawa mobile recording truck”(Hi 沖繩!High 爆嗌流動錄音車) event on 12 April.

Featuring an energetic dance performance by the cabin crew, locals could participate in the game and record their excitement about AirAsia's new direct flight to Okinawa. The more high-energy recordings captured, the greater the chance of winning a ticket to fly directly to Okinawa.

Terence So, head of marketing from AirAsia (Hong Kong and Macao), told MARKETING-INTERACTIVE that the main purpose of the event was to promote the new route enthusiastically under AirAsia’s theme “High Fly to Okinawa” (HI 沖繩!HIGH 爆亞!) as part of the branding effort. Additionally, a key highlight is the cabin crew, who has long been an icon of AirAsia.

The event took place in two rounds: the first at 12pm in Tsim Sha Tsui, and the second at Mong Kok's Langham Place.

Santisuk Klongchaiya, chief executive officer of Thai AirAsia, said: “I am truly excited and proud over this milestone. This new route marks Thai AirAsia’s groundbreaking service with a stopover in Hong Kong, a key strategic market and global financial hub."

"Our objective is to serve the continuously increasing travel demand between Hong Kong and Japan as strongly indicated by our market research. Notably, Okinawa ranks among the Top 5 most visited Japanese cities by Hong Kong tourists. With a flight time of approximately two and a half hours, this short-haul route offers a convenient short getaway or year-round beach retreat, making it an attractive option for travellers," he added.

“Expanding our route network through Fifth Freedom rights is a key strategy for growth and increasing regional connectivity across Asia. Following our success last year connecting Japan via Taipei and Kaohsiung, we are now building on that momentum with Hong Kong as our latest transit point. We are confident that this route will receive strong support from the market,” Klongchaiya added.

Don't miss: AirAsia banks on local DJs to connect music with travel in new campaign

Earlier this month, AirAsia unveiled an innovative travel campaign designed to inspire and engage younger travellers in Hong Kong and Macao. Featuring local DJs Jessica Ho(謝茜嘉), Dickson Yu(余德丞), and Ah Jeng(阿正), this initiative invites travellers to discover vibrant destinations through music and adventure.

Also known as “Bestie wild ride” (老Best大癲遊), the campaign aims to promote AirAsia's commitment to being the world’s best low-cost carrier while highlighting diverse travel experiences available to the customers.
