Meme platform 9GAG has unveiled Potatoz Survivors, its first online game featuring the original IP character “Potatoz”.

Launched last December, "Potatoz" was inspired by a 9GAG community tradition of ending long posts with “Sorry for the long post, here’s a Potato.” The team turned this inside joke into a lovable pixel art character.
9GAG turned this meme joke into the Potatoz IP, expanding into merchandise and events such as citywide treasure hunts. Now, Potatoz has leveled up and entered the world of online gaming.

The game, Potatoz Survivors, was developed in 60 days by 9GAG's chief product officer, Kevin Yuen, using AI technology. It aims to show how human humour and creativity can work together with AI. A 9GAG spokesperson told MARKETING-INTERACTIVE that this game is a truly borderless experience, as it is a free, browser-based online game that bypasses regional restrictions entirely.
"Whether a player is commuting in Tokyo, taking a coffee break in New York, or avoiding responsibilities anywhere else in the world, all they need is an internet connection and a browser. We built it to be universally accessible — because humour (and surviving a barrage of pixelated chaos) translates perfectly across all time zones," the spokesperson added.
According to 9GAG, Potatoz Survivors is a game that can be played on a phone or browser. No download is needed, no complicated registration, no paywall. It is completely free and easy to access - just pure meme entertainment ready to be enjoyed. This is a survival game where players shoot love hearts as bullets. Quick and sharp reflexes are needed to protect with love and survive.
The game also appeals to meme users who regularly communicate with friends using meme images, as they can appreciate the unique nature of internet culture.

The promotional strategy for the online game uses a balanced mix of high-impact owned channels and strategic earned media, according to the spokesperson. On the social front, 9GAG is leveraging the massive reach of its primary platforms alongside the dedicated Potatoz Instagram account to engage directly with our highly active community.
To complement this, 9GAG has distributed targeted press releases to both lifestyle and tech media outlets. This dual approach ensures it captures the cultural zeitgeist of the game while also highlighting the serious technological achievement behind its 60-day, AI-assisted development, said the spokpesperson.
Potatoz Survivors is not a one-off stunt, but a long-term expansion of the Potatoz IP into the interactive entertainment space, according to the spokesperson. 9GAG is committed to supporting and evolving the game over time. "We expect to see our players deeply engage with the mechanics, reaching impressively high levels of mastery, and perhaps losing a little sleep in the process. As the community's investment grows, so too will the Potatoz universe — with new features and expansions already on our radar."
"When I saw how enthusiastically the community welcomed Potatoz, I knew I had to do something special with it. That’s how Potatoz Survivors naturally came about. I wanted to create not just a fun game, but a way to give back to the community – because Potatoz comes from the community, it’s a reflection of what users connect with,” Yuen said.
Back in December last year, 9GAG launched a global collection of "Potatoz" merchandise — including plushies, cushions, pins, and stickers — to bring the character from the digital realm into real life.
The collection featured two blind box plushie series: the Potatoz Buttdy blind box series, with five designs (Santa Potatoz, Star Potatoz, Punk Potatoz, Robber Potatoz, and Cloak Potatoz), and the mini Potatoz blind box series, which includes Potatoz in fluffy plant pots, available in six colour variations and one hidden edition. All merchandise is available on the official 9GAG online shop.
