Vodafone softens its challenger edge for new iPhone push

Vodafone has taken a noticeably softer approach to its latest campaign, shifting away from the combative challenger positioning that has defined much of its advertising this year for a more product-focused iPhone push.

The telco has launched A Very Possibly True Story, a new campaign from Howatson+Company supporting the arrival of Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

It marks a change of pace for Vodafone after spending much of 2026 taking on Australia's larger telcos, most notably through a series of campaigns starring US comedian Ali Wong.

Vodafone kicked off that work in March as part of what it described as a return to its "challenger roots", following an expansion of its network to reach 98.5% of the Australian population.

A second instalment in May took more direct aim at Telstra's pricing, with Wong promoting a "big telco experience that's cheaper than TBLEEPra", while another campaign in June targeted the roaming charges of Vodafone's larger rivals.

The latest iPhone work is considerably less confrontational.

Rather than attacking competitors on price, coverage or roaming, A Very Possibly True Story uses an increasingly improbable night out to demonstrate the iPhone 18 Pro's camera and battery capabilities alongside Vodafone's expanded 5G network.

The campaign follows rideshare driver Mo recounting an increasingly unlikely evening involving Sydney R&B artist Boy Soda, a recording session and a snake, with the iPhone ultimately positioned as the most surprising part of his story.

Vodafone head of brand and marketing Lisa Cronin said the campaign was designed to demonstrate how the device and network perform in everyday use.

“This campaign is about proving the iPhone 18 Pro can keep up with a big night out. The camera, the battery and the Vodafone 5G network are all put to the test across one long night, because that's when people need their phone to perform,” Cronin said.

The campaign is running nationally across TV, BVOD, social and out-of-home.
