Android is bringing centuries-old Peranakan craftsmanship to the Formula 1 grid, welcoming McLaren driver Oscar Piastri to Singapore with a custom helmet featuring intricate beadwork by local artists.

The turquoise helmet features a large phoenix in red, orange and yellow, surrounded by floral motifs and green leaves, with copper-orange outlines framing its panels. Piastri’s name appears in gold script near the chin, alongside Android branding, while his “OP” logo sits at the rear.

The helmet was first teased in a short video on Android’s Instagram, before the brand released a longer interview taking viewers behind its design. Filmed at the Peranakan Museum Singapore, the video features Peranakan artist Angeline Kong presenting the helmet to Piastri and explaining how traditional craftsmanship and racing culture came together in the bespoke creation.

In the interview, Kong walks Piastri through the helmet’s intricate details, including the 350,000 glass beads covering its surface. The design took two months to complete, she explained, with the hand-embroidered and beaded work drawing on motifs and symbolism rooted in Peranakan culture.

The video also features other Peranakan artists, including Carolyn Law, who discusses how the craft connects the past, present and future. Once considered a dying art, Peranakan beading is being kept alive through efforts to pass its techniques on to younger generations, she shared.

The artists also explain the meaning behind traditional motifs featured in the design, including the phoenix, which symbolises virtue and prosperity, and the colour blue, associated with joy and happiness.

Beyond the individual motifs, the interview delves into the history of Peranakan art and its tradition of bringing together influences that may not initially seem to belong together. The resulting blend of cultures and styles offers a fitting parallel to the helmet itself, which brings Peranakan heritage into the world of motorsport.

For Piastri, who has received several specially designed helmets in Singapore, the collaboration stands out. “I’ve done a few special helmets in Singapore before, but this one is definitely my favourite,” he said.

Android framed the collaboration as a meeting of racing culture and centuries-old tradition, with its Instagram post inviting audiences to discover the meaning behind the helmet’s intricate details.

“Nothing is just decoration. Everything carries meaning,” Android said in the post, which positions the helmet as more than a visual statement, highlighting the stories and cultural significance woven into its design.

The video series comes as Piastri and F1 fans gear up for the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend. Google is a primary partner of the McLaren Formula 1 Team, with the partnership bringing Google products and technology to the team to create a more seamless experience across devices.

Throughout the season, McLaren will use 5G-enabled Android devices to support faster deployment, speed and real-time connectivity, helping to enhance on-track performance.
