VinFast rolls out EV rental programme to boost uptake in Indonesia and Philippines

VinFast is expanding its push into Southeast Asia’s commercial transport sector with the launch of a green vehicle rental programme in Indonesia and the Philippines, aimed at lowering barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption among ride-hailing and transport service drivers.

The initiative introduces a rental option alongside VinFast’s existing vehicle purchase model, allowing drivers to access its electric vehicle lineup through authorised dealerships in both markets. The move comes as fuel price volatility continues to pressure driver earnings, positioning EVs as a more cost-stable alternative.

Under the scheme, drivers can begin operating with a low upfront deposit and fixed daily rental rates starting from IDR 312,500 (US$18) in Indonesia and 1,000 pesos (US$17) in the Philippines. The model is designed to enable faster income generation without the financial burden of full vehicle ownership.

For those opting to purchase, VinFast is also offering tailored financing solutions structured around commercial use, with repayment schedules aligned to drivers’ income streams to improve cash flow and shorten payback periods.

The programme centres on VinFast’s “Green” vehicle lineup, including the Herio Green and Limo Green models, which are purpose-built for high-frequency transport services. These vehicles are engineered for durability and energy efficiency while maintaining passenger comfort – key considerations for daily commercial operations.

Initial rollout will focus on major urban hubs, including Greater Jakarta and Metro Manila, with plans for gradual expansion across both countries.

Beyond vehicle access, the programme is supported by VinFast’s broader regional EV ecosystem, including free charging at V-Green stations through March 2029. This added incentive is expected to significantly reduce operating costs for drivers and fleet operators.

“Expanding access to electric vehicles in Indonesia and the Philippines represents VinFast’s next logical step in advancing the green transition of the commercial transport sector, which plays a critical role in achieving sustainable development goals. This initiative not only provides drivers with a stable source of income, but also contributes to improved quality of life and lower emissions. It underscores VinFast’s commitment to supporting driver communities as they transition toward more sustainable livelihoods,” said Duong Thi Thu Trang, deputy CEO of global automotive sales at VinFast.

The initiative is part of a wider strategy by Vingroup, VinFast’s parent company, to accelerate EV adoption in Southeast Asia. This includes the rollout of its “trade gas for electric” programme, offering incentives of up to 3% of vehicle value, as well as a 10% discount on Green SM electric ride fares in Indonesia until 30 April 2026.

As competition intensifies in the region’s mobility sector, VinFast’s dual-track approach – combining rental and ownership – signals a pragmatic shift towards accessibility, targeting not just consumers but the vast network of gig economy drivers who underpin urban transport systems.
