As restaurants in the city were barred from offering dine-in services during Chinese New Year, Hongkongers yet again turned to food delivery platforms during the festival. Uber Eats Hong Kong has released some statistics on dining trends in the city to shine on a light on how locals eat and celebrate in the new normal.

During this year's Chinese New Year holiday (from 12 to 16 February), Uber Eats recorded a 50% year-on-year increase in order volume. Individual customers also produced some interesting figures. For example, one customer placed a self-pick up order of over HK$3,400 for pasta, ravioli, salad and starters. Another opted for an easy door-to-door sushi party set worth over HK$2,400 to ring in the Year of the Ox.

Uber Eats has also revealed Hongkongers' dining preferences. According to the platform, there was an 800% increase in healthy food orders during the dine-in restriction periods as people ordered more from vegan, vegetarian-friendly, and generally healthy restaurants.

Hongkongers also started enjoying dinner earlier, to 6pm, while ordering 22% more food per order. As for specific types of food, customers in the city ordered more dim sum including siu mai and shrimp dumplings. Hongkongers also preferred Japanese, Vietnamese and Taiwanese food, with Japanese food orders increasing tenfold year-over-year.

Meanwhile, Uber Eats has also expanded its delivery service to Tsing Yi.

“I am thrilled to introduce Uber Eats to Tsing Yi today, delicious food on demand is a convenience we believe everyone across Hong Kong should enjoy. My team and I are committed to investing with our partners and the F&B community to unlock more innovative and delightful food choices for Hongkongers,” said Elisa Janiec, general manager of Uber Eats Hong Kong.
