Football club Manchester United has arrived in Hong Kong for tonight's (30 May) friendly match against the local team, with thousands of tickets still available.
There are still around 10,000 tickets available for the game at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium, according to BBC and SCMP.
Scheduled for tonight at 8pm, the “Defining Education Challenge Cup - Hong Kong, China vs Manchester United” (凝皓教育挑戰盃 - 中國香港 對 曼聯) offers ticket prices between HK$399 and HK$2990. All ticket tiers are currently available, with all except the highest priced tier marked as “limited”, MARKETING-INTERACTIVE confirmed.
The slow ticket sales seem to indicate increasing fan dissatisfaction following the team's disappointing season, according to The Standard. This follows the team's 1-0 loss to ASEAN All-Stars (東盟全明星隊) in Malaysia on Wednesday (28 May), where they were booed off the field.
At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, a reporter mentioned the ticket sales situation for tonight's friendly match and asked Manchester United manager Ruben Filipe Marques Amorim why fans should spend money on expensive tickets to attend, according to HK01. Amorim urged supporters to keep backing the team, stating that those who can afford tickets should continue to do so. He also reflected on his own experience supporting Benfica during their challenging years in the 1990s, emphasising that he never stopped attending matches despite their poor performances.
Manchester United has returned to Hong Kong after 12 years, having last played in the city in 2013. The match will feature an all-star lineup, including Portuguese captain Bruno Fernandes, rising talent Kobbie Mainoo, and Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho. The team will hold a closed-door training session before the friendly, with midfielders Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Amad Diallo participating in a pre-match event.
