SPCA raises awareness of pet dental health with new campaign

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of pet dental health and provide pet owners with the resources, knowledge and tools, to keep their pets’ mouths healthy.

Also known as "Bright smile", the campaign addresses the alarming fact that over 80% of pets over the age of three suffer from dental disease, many of which go unnoticed by owners until they cause severe pain or health complications, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.

Pet dental problems such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay are often overlooked, with many pet owners unaware of the risks. Without proper care, these issues can lead to serious health conditions, including infections, kidney disease, and even heart disease.

Running from 14 July to 31 August, the SPCA is offering limited-time discounts and promotions to pet owners, including special-fee dental checks, discounted dental procedures, and 20% off select dental products and care bundles at SPCA Centres and SHOPCA.

Additionally, the SPCA will host a special edition of the Tsing Yi centre tour on 27 July, featuring chief veterinary surgeon Jane Gray’s live dental demonstration and a tour to explore the SPCA’s one-stop pet services, including veterinary care, grooming, retail, and behavioural training. Attendees can also access members-only rooftop facilities and have 10% off at The Nest café and retail shop.

To amplify the campaign, the SPCA has unveiled a "Flip the lip" social media initiative. From 16 July to 30 July, pet owners can join by sharing photos of their pets’ bright smiles while gently flipping their lips to reveal their teeth and gums. The top three participants with the brightest smiles will receive a free dental check-up and a dental care hamper.

Gray said: “Many owners don’t realise that untreated dental problems can cause significant pain and lead to life-threatening complications. Through the ‘Bright smiles’ dental campaign, we aim to educate pet owners and make dental care more accessible to ensure every pet lives a healthier, happier life.”

Don't miss: SPCA inspires HK fitness community to help animals in need

Back in March, the SPCA inspired the local fitness community to help animals in need with the fundraising campaign.

From April to June, the SPCA teamed up with pet-friendly gyms and animal-loving personal trainers and fitness instructors to offer a series of fundraising events. From dog-friendly run clubs, hiking trips, push-ups to group class trials, all proceeds from these activities supported the SPCA’s animal welfare initiatives and rescued animals in need.
