Sapporo is bringing its 150-year brewing heritage to life at Hysan Place in Causeway Bay with Hong Kong’s first manga-inspired Japanese tachinomi (standing bar) experience.

Open to the public from the evening of 25 September to 8 October 2026, the interactive pop-up invites visitors to celebrate the milestone through fresh draught pours, authentic Japanese standing-bar culture, and limited-edition collectibles.

Rooted in a legacy established in Hokkaido in 1876, the activation reinterprets the journey of founder Seibei Nakagawa, who famously brought Western brewing craft to Japan. Conceptualised by creative agency BBDO Hong Kong, the pop-up translates this pioneering spirit into a contemporary cultural setting tailored for Hong Kong audiences.

At the heart of the pop-up is a circular timber pavilion inspired by a Japanese tachinomi standing bar, with warm paper lanterns and overhead manga panels creating an immersive environment. Visitors can follow The Story of Seibei Nakagawa through illustrated panels and a QR code on collectible manga paper cups while enjoying a fresh draught pour in the convivial atmosphere of the bar.

A spokesperson from Sapporo told MARKETING-INTERACTIVE that when managing a brand with a 150-year legacy rooted in Hokkaido (1876), the core strategic challenge is avoiding the "museum trap"—looking backward instead of remaining culturally vital.

"Our mandate was not merely to commemorate the pioneering journey of founder Seibei Nakagawa, but to make his relentless spirit feel visceral and contemporary for Hong Kong consumers."

The campaign also utilised cultural translation—converting historical archives into a modern visual language through Hong Kong’s first manga-inspired Japanese tachinomi (standing bar) experience. "By anchoring the brand in contemporary urban subculture, we transformed heritage into a living, breathing brand asset that proves a century-and-a-half-old brand can remain daring and culturally resonant."

Steven Wong, marketing director, Hong Kong & Taiwan at Carlsberg Brewery, said, "Reaching 150 years is a rare milestone, but we didn’t want to celebrate Sapporo’s heritage by looking backward or simply telling our history. We wanted people to live it. Sapporo was born from a relentless pioneering spirit in 1876 when Nakagawa Seibei brought authentic brewing craft to Japan, and that same dedication lives in every pour today."

"By transforming Causeway Bay into Hong Kong’s first manga-style Japanese bar, we’ve taken the story directly off our limited-edition anniversary cans and turned it into an immersive urban playground. It’s our way of proving that a 150-year-old brand can remain modern, culturally vital, and creatively daring," he added.

To extend the heritage story beyond the bar, Sapporo has developed a limited-edition collection of 150th-anniversary lifestyle collectibles, including graphic apparel, a Sapporo Katana Opener, a washed denim tote bag and other merchandise inspired by the brand and the manga narrative. The collection connects Sapporo’s brewing heritage with contemporary streetwear and collectible culture.

The experience is supported by KOL engagement, on-site activations and social content spanning culture, lifestyle, fashion and food and beverage communities. Visitors aged 18 and above can follow Sapporo’s official social channels and present their device to on-site promoters to redeem a fresh draught beer during the pop-up, subject to event terms and availability.

The success of the campaign is measured through earned media value, organic user-generated content across social channels, and sentiment shifts regarding brand modernity and relevance among target demographics. Audience engagement and dwell time are quantified via total attendee numbers, daily footfall velocity, and fresh draught redemptions, which reflect deep behavioural commitment rather than fleeting attention.

Meanwhile, commercial pull-through is also evaluated through the retail uptake of the brand's exclusive 150th-anniversary merchandise collection and corresponding in-store product sales uplifts, proving that experiential design directly drives commercial conversion.
