Roblox unveils Kids and Select accounts to tighten youth protections in Indonesia

Indonesia has become one of the first markets globally to receive Roblox’s new age-based account system for users under 16, as the gaming platform intensifies its focus on child safety, parental oversight, and regulatory compliance.
The rollout introduces two new account categories – Roblox Kids and Roblox Select – designed to tailor content access, communication features, and parental controls according to users’ age groups. The company said the launch forms part of its broader effort to create “a more age-appropriate digital experience for children and teenagers”.
The move positions Indonesia at the forefront of the platform’s latest global safety initiative, ahead of wider launches in markets including New Zealand, Australia, and the Netherlands.

Under the updated framework, users aged between five and 12 will automatically be assigned to Roblox Kids accounts, while those aged 13 to 15 will be placed under Roblox Select. The accounts are determined through Roblox’s global age-verification system or through verified parental settings.
For Roblox Kids users, all communication features are disabled by default, and access is limited to games categorised under “Minimal” or “Mild” content ratings. Roblox Select users, meanwhile, can access games rated up to “Moderate”, while chat functions require parental approval and are restricted to trusted connections.
The updated framework combines age verification, content ratings, moderation systems, and expanded parental controls into a single safety ecosystem for younger audiences.
The move comes as Indonesia pushes digital platforms to strengthen protections for younger users under its PP TUNAS child safety regulations.
As part of the update, Roblox is also expanding parental oversight tools, allowing guardians to monitor gameplay activity, manage communication settings, control screen-time and spending limits, and block or approve specific games.
The platform said parents will continue to retain selected oversight capabilities until users turn 16.
The safety overhaul also introduces a more selective content evaluation process for games available to under-16 audiences. Roblox said developers whose games appear within Kids and Select accounts must undergo identity verification, enable two-factor authentication, and maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription.
In addition, Roblox said it will continue deploying AI-powered moderation tools, real-time scene monitoring, and ongoing user-report evaluations to identify policy violations and unsuitable content.
The company also confirmed it plans to transition toward the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework, aligning Roblox’s content ratings with globally recognised systems such as ESRB and PEGI.
Roblox said the changes form part of its longer-term ambition to become “the healthiest platform in the world for users of all ages”, while balancing creative freedom with stricter built-in safety protections for younger audiences.
