Roblox moves to review age ratings amid ban threat in Indonesia

Roblox has pledged to work with Indonesia’s Game Rating System (IGRS) to review and adjust its classifications after government officials warned the platform could be blocked over violent content.
The statement was conveyed in an official letter to the ministry of communication and digital (Komdigi). IGRS, overseen by Komdigi, categorises interactive electronic games by content type and age appropriateness. Minister of Komdigi Meutya Hafid welcomed the move, describing it as proof that constructive dialogue can lead to tangible results.
“We appreciate Roblox’s move to affirm its willingness to comply with Indonesian regulations. This shows that constructive dialogue can lead to concrete steps to protect Indonesian children while strengthening the digital creative industry ecosystem,” she said in a statement.

Beyond regulatory alignment, Roblox’s letter also outlined plans to share findings from an economic impact study, highlighting the platform’s contribution to the growth of local developers in Indonesia.
The Indonesian government has maintained a firm stance on digital safety, stressing that the country should not only be a user market but also a hub for digital talent and a safe, inclusive online space.
Roblox’s commitment comes after heightened scrutiny earlier this year. In August, minister of state secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated the government might block games containing violent content if proven harmful to young audiences. His remarks followed a warning from primary and secondary education minister Abdul Mu’ti, who said that primary school pupils should not play Roblox due to violent themes.
As part of ongoing talks, Komdigi requested Roblox to establish a local office and comply with regulations, particularly Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 (PP Tunas) on child online protection and SAMAN, the country’s content moderation compliance system.
Globally, Roblox has also been shifting towards standardised content classification. The platform recently partnered with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), enabling region-specific ratings such as ESRB (US), PEGI (Europe), and IGRS (Indonesia).
“Roblox is committed to creating a safe platform for our users and empowering parents to make the best decision for their children,” said Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer.
