PR in 2027: Indonesia's leaders look beyond visibility to influence and authority
share on
As AI reshapes how people discover information and audiences become more selective about who and what they trust, Indonesia's PR landscape is entering 2027 with a sharper focus on relevance and influence.
PR's role is expected to extend further beyond traditional media relations. AI-powered search, creators, communities and social platforms are reshaping how brands build authority, while earned media remains an important source of credibility and validation.
There is also a stronger emphasis on authenticity and human connection. PR leaders expect brands to invest in credible voices, local insights and real-time reputation management, while moving away from campaigns focused purely on visibility or volume.

By 2027, Indonesia’s communications landscape will be shaped by two fast-moving realities: how quickly rumours go viral and how briefly content holds attention. When viral rumours spread across social media in minutes, brands can’t rely on slow-response approvals or formal press releases to protect their name.
Protecting a brand takes two things: defending your reputation in real time and keeping your human voice front and centre. When viral critiques blow up, generic corporate statements are not enough. Indonesian audiences want speed, but they care even more about real warmth and honest proof.
Communications teams need to act as real-time truth defenders: responding fast with clear leadership voices and solid facts before internet noise takes over.
In an era of viral outrage and AI noise, speed gets you heard, but authentic human truth keeps you safe. By 2027, real-time trust is your best shield.

Indonesia’s PR and communications landscape in 2027 will increasingly shift from visibility to trust-led influence. As AI makes content faster and easier to produce, credibility, authenticity and local relevance will become even more important.
Brands can no longer rely on one-way storytelling or media coverage alone. Indonesian audiences increasingly discover and engage with information through social media, creators, communities and AI-powered search. Earned media will remain critical, but increasingly for the credibility and validation it provides rather than reach alone.
We expect communications budgets to follow this shift, with greater investment in digital and social storytelling, KOLs and creators, AI-enabled communications, reputation management and stakeholder engagement. Meanwhile, spending on standalone campaigns without measurable, sustained business value could decline.
Technology will help brands scale, but in Indonesia, credible voices, strong local relevance and trusted human relationships will ultimately determine who builds lasting influence.

In Indonesia, PR has long been measured by output - placements, reach, coverage count. While those measures still matter, the ground has shifted.
Audiences are no longer passive recipients of brand messaging; they cross-reference, compare, and form opinions through people and platforms they’ve chosen to follow.
The ecosystem carrying influence has expanded well beyond traditional media - and the disciplines of PR, social and creator marketing are converging in ways the market hasn’t fully reckoned with.
The opportunity for 2027 is in intentionality. The question isn’t simply how to secure more coverage, but which stories are worth telling and how to build them in a way that earns attention, builds trust, and creates influence across every channel that matters.
What the more intentional ones will start asking is what sits behind that spend: audience intelligence, creator relations built on genuine fit, and communications counsel tied to business decisions, not just campaign execution.
Volume without strategy doesn’t compound. The brands that figure that out in 2027 will make that spend work significantly harder.

PR is evolving from media relations into trust orchestration, managing how a brand is understood across journalists, creators, experts, communities, algorithms, and AI-generated answers.
The PR sector remains in its role as credibility, stakeholder management, and trust builder. Since authority is being redistributed, PR needs to build influence systems that make brands credible, discoverable and relevant across media, people, platforms and AI.
In 2027, communication budgets should fund strong storytelling and authority creation: original research, specialist relationships, credible creators, communities and reputation intelligence. Measure their contribution against trust, consideration and growth. Edelman’s 2026 study found that 70% of respondents are unwilling or hesitant to trust someone with different values, facts or cultural backgrounds.
Brands need narratives grounded in evidence, validated by independent voices and adapted for each audience. The formula is institutional credibility multiplied by human relatability and digital distribution. AI is becoming a gatekeeper. When someone asks about your brand, which sources shape the answer? PR must strengthen the evidence available for that answer.
The priority is building an ecosystem where facts withstand scrutiny, people find relevance, and search engines and AI can discover accurate brand information.
Leighton Cosseboom, country lead of Alpha Story, Indonesia

The biggest shift in 2027 will be PR moving back to the front of the marketing stack because of AI search.
In the SEO era, clients asked how marcomms could generate backlinks. With Gemini and other AI discovery tools, the authority of the source citing your brand matters far more, which makes blue-chip media coverage incredibly valuable.
In no uncertain terms, AI search visibility will continue to dominate the PR conversation next year.
Meanwhile, audiences are ruthless about brand inauthenticity (they can smell it on you). Brands must find the nexus of authenticity and opportunity based on current culture. They should not chase macro KOLs or manufacture half-baked relevance.
In Southeast Asia, budgets will stay tight, but spend will move toward partners that combine press coverage with strategic intelligence, key audience insights, and data-backed narrative.
