In a post-COVID world, hygiene will be everything, and travellers need their own space.

That's according to the results of a new survey from airport hospitality services provider, Plaza Premium Group, that reveals some interesting insights about consumers' travel plans for the future.

The survey, titled "What the New Normal in Airport Hospitality Is", gathered responses from 2,000 travellers around the world from Plaza Premium Group's customer database, physical visitors to its lounges and hotels, and the group's website and social media. Participants were asked for feedback on everything from air travel to hospitality to their thoughts on travel now and in the future.

Among the findings:

  • 26% of respondents intend to travel within the next 6-12 months
  • 59% of respondents will travel as soon as travel bans and restrictions are lifted
  • 83% of respondents believe that airport lounges and in-terminal hotels will be essential when travel resumes, due to the need for private spaces, as well as hygiene and safety in the airport being of the highest priority
  • 47% of respondents intend to wash their hands every 1-3 hours whilst at the airport, and 26% said they would wash their hands every 30 to 60 minutes

The results show that while travellers don't expect to take a trip anytime soon, the majority are ready and actively plan to when restrictions are no longer in place, whenever that may be. Hygiene is expectedly a top-of-mind priority, and the significant demand for lounges and private areas should be a sign to airports, hospitality providers and marketers alike to increase their focus on ensuring travellers have enough space to feel protected along their journey.
