Pinterest expands shoppable AR feature for eyeshadow

Visual inspiration-sharing platform Pinterest has expanded its AR mobile offerings once again — this time, for eyeshadow.

Building on the success of last year's AR Try On feature for lipstick, the latest upgrade lets users virtually "test out" different eyeshadow palettes against their skin tone, so they can try before they buy. Over 4,000 shoppable shades can be tested, available from top brands such as Lancome, YSL, Urban Decay and NYX Cosmetics.

What started as a fun and technologically impressive use of its "Lens" visual search technology in 2020 now feels like a near-necessity in our "new normal", as the pandemic and social distancing measures that followed have driven down footfall at beauty counters around the globe. According to Pinterest's own data, pinners are five times more likely to consider purchasing pins with AR Try On functionality than those without. 

In addition to the AR features, Pinterest expanded its product tagging beta, opening "shoppable Story Pins" up to a limited number of advertisers and also creators over the coming months.
