More than 3,800 restaurants and merchants in Hong Kong will offer discounts and promotions to citizens tomorrow in celebration of the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule. Many participating businesses will provide 71% discounts, symbolically referencing the handover date.

Initiated by Hong Kong's catering sector, this marks the third consecutive year the industry has provided discounts to Hongkongers. This year’s event particularly aligns with the government’s policy to promote the “silver economy”, with some restaurants and shops rolling out special offers for senior citizens.

Restaurants joining the campaign include Pizza Hut Hong Kong, which is offering free chicken wings for dine-in orders over HK$200 or takeaway orders above HK$150. Meanwhile, KFC Hong Kong is selling classic egg tarts for HK$7.1 each with a designated redemption code, while McDonald’s is offering an iced coconut milk latte for HK$9.9 via its app from 1 to 7 July.

Other participating restaurants, such as Tai Hing, Men Wah Bing Teng, TeaWood, and Trusty Congee King, are extending the 71% discount for dine-in customers. Convenience stores 7-Eleven and Circle K are also participating, with 88% off selected desserts and 29% off fresh juices, respectively. Beverage brand COTI is offering buy-one-get-one-free coffee deals.

Additional participants include Fairwood, Maxim’s MX, Hung Fook Tong, and The Master of Char Siu, MeetMetMet, SULJI, Banchan & Cook. As part of the promotion, the 71st, 2,071st, 4,071st, and subsequent qualifying customers will receive HK$7,100 vouchers, while the highest-spending member will be awarded HK$71,000 in cash coupons.

Winston Yeung, chair of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trades, told HKFP that the campaign aims to celebrate the anniversary while encouraging local spending amid an economic slowdown.

Apart from the F&B sector, the MTR will also distribute 71,000 e-single journey tickets through a lucky draw on 1 July and provide Airport Express offers to holders of Child Octopus and JoyYou Cards.

Free rides on several ferry routes will be offered on 1 July, with vouchers for certain ferry routes to be distributed in advance. Citizens can also enjoy free rides on all passenger tram routes from 1 July to 3 July.

On 1 July, the use of fee-charging leisure and cultural facilities of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and admission to the Hong Kong Wetland Park under the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department will be complimentary. The public can also enjoy free admission to all general admission exhibitions at M+ and all thematic exhibitions at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.

Additional free guided tours, dining, consumption and accommodation offers will be available from mid-June to early July by the 12 projects under the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme.
