Octopus launches ‘tap to win’ instant rewards for CNY

As Chinese New Year approaches, Octopus Cards has launched a new promotion that lets users of mobile Octopus or JoyYou Cards win instant rewards at participating merchants equipped with the new Octopus reader.

Running from 14 to 19 February, the “Tap to get a chance to win Octopus value HK$28 reward” (「一嘟即發」新春獎賞) initiative includes customers who make a single purchase of HK$100 or more using a mobile Octopus or a JoyYou Card at any participating merchant stores equipped with the new Octopus reader. These customers will have the chance to instantly win an Octopus Reward valued at up to HK$28.

Upon payment, if customers hear a congratulatory message voiced in Cantonese by local radio host Bonnie Wong (阿正) — “Congratulations! You’ve won $[amount] Octopus reward!” (恭喜你贏咗價值(獎賞價值)蚊八達通獎賞!), indicating a successful draw.

The reward amount will be instantly deducted from the relevant transaction amount paid with the customer’s mobile Octopus or JoyYou Card, without any registration or waiting time, ensuring a simple, fast, and festive experience.

Furthermore, from 3 to 28 February, 29 participating retailers and F&B brands are offering exclusive Chinese New Year discounts for Octopus users. For example, customers can receive HK$10 off takeaway orders of HK$150 or more at Tai Hing, Men Wah Bing Teng, Trusty Congee King, TeaWood, and other selected Tai Hing Group restaurants. There is also a 12% discount on the DS dried seafood series at DS Groceries for purchases of HK$100 or more. These promotions aim to meet various festive needs, from stocking up on new year goods to enjoying reunion meals, enhancing the overall experience for Octopus users during the holiday season.

In addition to rewards and merchant offers, the Octopus app continues to feature its signatre “eLaisee” function. This allows customers to send digital red packets to family and friends anytime, anywhere via the Octopus app. Customers can also customise the amount and quantity of each “elaisee”, allowing family and friends to scan a QR code to receive their red packets, blending convenience with an interactive element of fun and surprise over the festive season.

Back in October last year, Octopus Cards partnered up with Japan's PayPay, allowing Hong Kong travellers to make instant payments in Hong Kong dollars at millions of Japanese merchants.

Through the dedicated "travel page" in the Octopus app, Hong Kong users can complete transactions using either customer-scans-merchant QR codes or merchant-scans-customer QR codes, eliminating currency exchange complications while supporting both mobile Octopus and Octopus wallet top-up methods.
