Mydin trolls social distancing in supermarkets and mosques as restrictions lift
share on
Mydin has decided to be cheeky and troll Malaysians when it comes to social distancing. The tweet came shortly after prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the lifting of restrictions on opening hours for shops and restaurants beginning 1 April. Places of worship are also no longer limited to 50% capacity nor are they required to maintain one-metre social distancing. Following the announcement, Mydin tweeted two images, comparing how its supermarket and mosques will look like on 31 March compared with 1 April.
The first picture shows Malaysians abiding by the safety distancing rules in its supermarket on 31 March while the other showed locals in a packed supermarket queueing at the cashier on 1 April.
Following the announcement, Mydin has cheekily tweeted two images, comparing how its supermarket will look like in 1 April, versus 31 March. On the first picture (pictured left), it shows Malaysians abiding to the safety distancing rules, whereas the other (pictured right), showed the locals in a packed supermarket queuing at the cashier lines.
The local supermarket chain went a step further to show how crowds in mosques would be like on 31 March and 1 April. To illustrate this, it tweeted a picture of a handful of individuals praying while still abiding by social distancing rules on those days. A+M has reached out to Mydin for comment on its marketing plans following the lifting of restrictions.

Without a doubt, Mydin's tweet caught the attention of social media users in Malaysia, garnering more than 7k likes and 2k retweets at the time of writing. One user even called Mydin's post a "master class advertisement" while others responded with puns and memes.

However, there were other users who were pretty serious with their responses, asking if Mydin would be including a self-checkout lane and if the post was related to April Fool's Day. KTM and 7-Eleven decided to join in on the fun too, with KTM telling Mydin to relax and perform Maghrib prayers. In response, Mydin said it is waiting for the KTM train which is running late. Meanwhile, 7-Eleven also pointed out that it was Maghrib.
Mydin is no stranger to trendjacking or interacting with other brands on social media. Last February, the supermarket showed its support to Tesco Malaysia's rebranding to Lotuss Stores Malaysia. In a post, Mydin said: "Hello's, cheerio, ol' friend. Sawadee and a warm welcome to our new neighbour. Your local kawan (friend), Mydin." This was accompanied by a basket of goodies and a turquoise-looking background, also known as Lotus's Green which was in line with the new branding.
At the same time, MD Ameer Ali Mydin was also roped in to front its TikTok account when it first launched on 16 April during the Movement Control Order. The majority of the initial videos feature Ameer doing various tricks to highlight the deals and promotions offered, as well as the Wipe It Down and Sunglasses challenges. The account also features Mydin's board of directors.
