MTR and Disney bring 'Mickey & Friends' to 7 HK stations

MTR Corporation has brought Disney magic into everyday travel, bringing beloved Disney characters to life across seven MTR stations.

Running until 23 October, the "Mickey & friends journey with me" campaign is timed around the new school year, Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day Golden Week travel period.

Featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Chip 'n' Dale, Pluto and Goofy in brand-new "work-and-school" looks, the campaign aims to accompany passengers on their daily journeys and bring a burst of fun to everyday travel. It combines themed stations, themed Light Rail vehicles, customer ride programmes and exclusive merchandise to create social-sharing moments, encourage exploration and extend the experience beyond a single journey.

At the centre of the campaign are seven themed stations: Admiralty, Kai Tak, Choi Hung, Prince Edward, Jordan, Diamond Hill and Central. Each gives a different character a distinct setting and personality, from Mickey as a smartly suited Central office worker to Minnie’s workplace look at Choi Hung, and Donald, Daisy, Chip ’n’ Dale, and the wider cast in student or casual lifestyles across the network. The creative is rooted in daily Hong Kong life, and the station becomes a platform for moments that commuters can photograph, share and revisit.

The campaign's visual identity has drawn on MTR's mosaic station walls, pairing a globally recognised IP with a distinctly local design asset. The "Only in Hong Kong" photo proposition holds relevance for residents and visitors alike. With Golden Week falling during the campaign period, the themed station decorations are positioned as social-ready stops for visitors exploring the city, particularly on social platforms where Hong Kong-specific visual moments can travel beyond the physical network.

To turn station discovery into cross-network participation, MTR is rewarding the first 5,000 MTR Mobile members to collect digital badges at all seven themed stations with one limited-edition Mickey & Friends character stand. The seven designs are randomly distributed in blind bags and feature commuter-inspired character looks set against MTR mosaic-station backdrops. MTR also aims to boost weekend and public holiday ridership during the same period, rewarding the top 2,000 members with the highest cumulative eligible journeys with a complete set of seven limited-edition character stands.

Two themed Light Rail vehicles, featuring Donald Duck and Chip ’n’ Dale, will operate on designated “Light Rail Voyager” routes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 19 September to 19 October. A HK$68 Light Rail Travel Pass set provides access to the designated themed service, unlimited Light Rail rides on the same day, a Mickey & Friends sticker pack, and a HK$50 coupon for MTR e-Store physical shops.

To extend the experience beyond the railway, MTR is partnering with Hong Kong Disneyland to offer exclusive rewards for Disney fans. The merchandise collection comprises nearly 100 limited-edition items, translating MTR assets into keepsakes that range from themed Light Rail models and MTR carriage-themed building-block blind boxes to apparel, bags and homeware. Familiar MTR messages, including "Mind the platform gap" and "Do not cross the yellow line," are reinterpreted through Mickey & Friends, giving ride-courtesy and safety reminders a playful everyday expression.

By blending Disney’s character appeal with MTR’s railway identity, the collection gives Disney fans, railway enthusiasts and MTR customers a tangible way to take the journey home.

Diana Chiu, general manager, marketing and revenue management of MTR Corporation, said: “MTR is more than a mass transit network. Our stations are vibrant community hubs and iconic landmarks for visitors. By strategically tapping into the booming IP economy in Hong Kong, MTR strives to utilise its extensive network and cultural uniqueness to create engaging and interactive travelling journeys for passengers.”

“By bringing beloved characters such as Disney’s Mickey & Friends in our network, timed to add an extra spark of magic during the Mid-Autumn Festival and Golden Week, we are creating shareable moments for passengers, delivering an immersive 'Only in Hong Kong' experience that delights local commuters and captivates global visitors alike,” Chiu added.

As part of its effort to move IP collaboration beyond a promotional moment, this is not MTR's first move. Back in July, MTR Corporation reunited with creative studio AllRightsReserved to launch a summer campaign capitalising on Hong Kong's booming intellectual property (IP) economy ahead of the CHIIKAWA ARTIVERSE exhibition.

In conversation with MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, the spokesperson said summer is a strategically important period for MTR, as local families look for engaging outings with their children and tourists flock to Hong Kong to experience the city at its liveliest.
