MILO upgrades paper straw designs in Thailand after consumer feedback

MILO has unveiled its new paper straw in Thailand that seeks to meet the needs of every group of consumers, especially mothers and children. Touted as a more robust version of paper straws, the new version of the straw was developed under the concept "For our Kids, for our Planet" after reviewing consumer feedback. With the launch of the new paper straws, the brand explained that consumers can have a better drinking experience, while still helping to protect the environment.

To thank its consumers, and highlight the importance of every feedback received, MILO Thailand also released a short video spot on its YouTube channel, which has garnered 3,389,114 views at the point of writing. Titled "ไมโลขอบคุณทุกคำแนะนำ เพื่อพัฒนาหลอดกระดาษให้ดีขึ้น" (MILO thanks everyone for feedback on paper straws), the video features a mother and young son having fun at the beach while enjoying the MILO beverages. To spotlight the new version of the straw, the mother and son also took turns to stick post-its on the straw of a giant-sized MILO packet.

According to MILO, the new paper straw is more durable than the previous version and can endure moisture better. In addition, the brand has made the bottom tip of the straw pointier such that it can easily penetrate the MILO box.

On the sustainability front, the new paper straws are touted to be recyclable and made from 100% virgin paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and hence still safe for consumers to use. Made with materials with renewable paper sources, the sustainable management and design of the straws have helped to reduce the use of plastic straws by more than 600 million since 2022, the beverage brand added.

Chaiyong Sakulborrirug, business executive officer, Dairy and Adult Nutrition, Nestlé said: "MILO would like to thank all of our consumers for the advice and suggestions they gave on our previous paper straw version which we officially launched in 2020. This is a driving force that keeps us striving to further develop and improve the quality of our paper straw and provide consumers with the best MILO drinking experience."

Additionally, this also plays a crucial role in protecting the environment, he added. "Our slogan 'For our Kids, for our Planet' aligns with the global trend of developing environmentally friendly initiatives and reflects Nestlé's sustainability commitment to reduce negative environmental impact by helping to develop a better world for future generations," Sakulborrirug explained. MARKETING-INTERACTIVE has reached out to MILO for additional information.

Separately, Nestlé Malaysia first introduced paper straws for its MILO UHT 125ml drink packs during the fourth quarter of 2019. According to the company, this would aid in avoiding 40 million plastic straws being used each year. Following this pilot initiative, the company also planned to roll out this packaging solution to its other MILO UHT variants in phases, with the ultimate objective of eliminating over 200 million plastic straws a year.

According to the brand then, this was one of the many initiatives it had in-store in its war on plastic waste. Nestlé explained previously that it was continuously developing environmentally-friendly solutions, which have resulted in two-thirds of its total plastic packaging being designed for recycling.
