Media Prima Labs launched Alpha Startups: Game Edition. The one week programme, organised by 1337 Ventures and Media Prima Labs, gathered participants from the region who were passionate about mobile gaming content and aims to nurture new and young talents.
The platform also aims to equip gaming fans with new knowledge through the exchange of ideas between contestants. The event was meant to both prepare startups for their big crowdfunding launch, and grant teams access to networking opportunities with investors, publishers, distributors, and successful game studios from around the Southeast Asia. Prior to the hackathon, all 12 teams attended a week long bootcamp where they spent time with game industry mentors.
The teams need to get their projects validated by having the campaign partially funded in order to unlock the last level of funding, an amount between RM50,000 and RM200,000. 1337 Ventures and Media Prima are also in talks with other publishers in the region who may be interested to co-invest in the teams.
Bikesh Lakhmichand, CEO of 1337 Venture, added, “While there is growing demand in the region for more games, there lies a supply mismatch in terms of quality game talent, support and funding. Our goal with Media Prima is to bridge that gap and provide a launchpad for game founders to validate their idea, master their business game plan and market their products more effectively.”
