The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has slapped five telcos with 15 compound fines worth RM750,000 for registering prepaid SIM cards without verifying user information. According to MCMC, Digi had five compound fines worth RM250,000, which was the highest number. It was followed by Maxis with four compound fines worth RM20,000.

Meanwhile, U Mobile was issued three compound fines amounting to RM150,000, while Tune Talk and YTL Communications were handed two compound fines worth RM100,000 and RM50,000 respectively.

The act of registering prepaid SIM cards without verifying user information is an offence under Section 127 of the Communications and Multimedia Act. It can result in a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment for two years or both upon conviction. This comes after MCMC conducted audits in Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu between August to October last year.

According to MCMC, the total number of compound fines issued this year, including the recent ones, is 70 which amount to RM3.45 million. This is 16% higher compared to 58 compounds issued last year worth RM2.9 million for the same offence.

In October, MCMC also handed out 15 compound finds amounting to RM700,000 against six telcos for the same offence. U Mobile was hit with five compound fines valued at RM250,000, followed by Celcom Axiata and Tune Talk with a fine of RM150,000. Maxis, YTL Communications, and Tone Plus were each fined RM100,000, RM40,000, and RM10,000 respectively.
