MY Police warns of SMS scam with MySejahtera app and Touch ‘n Go

The Malaysian police has warned the public on social media of an on going SMS scam messages from MySejahtera app for financial aid through Touch ‘n Go's e-wallet. The post comes after a victim lost RM80. According to The Star, victims will receive fake links from unknown numbers claiming that MySejahtera has credited their COVID-19 financial aid, and has responded to the affected user they processing this report to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

The victims will be at risk as exposing their personal details, because they are required to provide their account PIN number and phone numbers on the fake website. The Malaysian law enforcement officers have posted in a separate post on Twitter that MySejahtera app has not credited any financial help. The public has been urged not to open links provided from unknown numbers and to verify any SMSes with the relevant party. 

SMS scams have grown rapidly in the era of digital communications. Impersonation scams have been on the rise in recent years and many major Malaysian brands have had to release statements to better educate their customers on the rise of such scams. Not only do such scams impact consumers, they are also detrimental to consumer trust and loyalty, which ultimately can gravely impact the bottom line a brand.

In January this year, Shopee Malaysia had to issue a warning to the public to be wary of individuals impersonating the eCommerce platform's employees. These individuals are said to offer employment opportunities, cash rewards, and lucky draws via messaging platforms, such as WhatsApp.
